How to Unlock the Rift Incompatible Achievement in Borderlands 4

The “Rift Incompatible” achievement in Borderlands 4 is one of the game’s more easily missable trophies — and it’s tied to an optional decision during the Exit Through the Rift Shop side mission. If you’ve been wondering why this achievement hasn’t popped despite completing the quest, here’s a step-by-step guide covering how to unlock it, what choice you must make, and where to find Francis Oddman’s final resting place.

“Rift Incompatible” is a Bronze achievement/trophy linked to the fate of Francis Oddman, a scientist whose experiments with rifts go disastrously wrong. You’ll earn it only if you handle his confrontation in a very specific way — one that many players can easily miss on their first run.

How To Start “Exit Through the Rift Shop”

Before you can even attempt to unlock “Rift Incompatible,” you’ll need to complete the Exit Through the Rift Shop side mission.

This quest becomes available after finishing all main missions in the Fadefields and can start from one of several random locations where a corpse drops out of a rift:

  • Fadefields: West of the Watershed Gate Point of Interest
  • Terminus Range: North of Checkpoint Vermillion
  • The Low Leys (Terminus Range): South of the Deathrite Silo

Interact with the fallen corpse to trigger the quest and receive a call from Francis Oddman. He’ll direct you to his lab at the Deep Seven Silo, located beneath the Fadefields.

Step-by-Step: How to Complete the Mission

Once you’ve accepted the mission, follow these objectives in sequence:

  1. Meet Francis Oddman – Find him at the Deep Seven Silo and talk to him.
  2. Gather Machine Parts – Travel to the Order camp at the Waterstop Point in the Coastal Boneyard. Look for three Hyperliminal Waveform Transducer Parts hidden inside silver pipes:
    • Behind a roofed house in the center of the camp
    • Behind the largest house with graffiti near a broken Order ship
    • Beneath the camp near a submerged truck in the water
  3. Return to Oddman – Bring the parts back and install them into the rift machine.
  4. Enter the Rift – Grapple into the rift to reach an Order facility filled with enemies.
  5. Rescue Prisoners – Defeat all enemies, release the captives, and talk to three of them for bonus dialogue.
  6. Retrieve the Enriched Eridium – Crawl through the vent on the catwalk, open the locker in the storage room, and take the Eridium.
  7. Reopen the Rift – Toss the Eridium chunk into the rift to reactivate it and return to the lab.
  8. Defeat the Order Reinforcements – Clear out the enemies that appear outside the Silo.

Now you’ll face the quest’s most important moment.

The Critical Choice: Punch or Shoot Francis Oddman

After completing the tasks, you’ll confront Oddman about his actions. At this point, you’ll have two dialogue options:

  • Punch Francis Oddman
  • Shoot Francis Oddman

To unlock the “Rift Incompatible” achievement, you must punch him. Use the melee input — press the right stick (R3) on controller or the V key on keyboard — to hit him. This causes Oddman to fall backward into the rift, disappearing entirely.

If you shoot him, he dies on the spot, and the achievement becomes permanently locked for that character.

Where To Find Francis Oddman’s Body

After punching Oddman, travel to Windspear in the Terminus Range. Teleport to The Nightcap Safehouse, then head north past the Maker’s Pike Point of Interest toward the frozen lake east of the Umbral Foundry.

You’ll find Oddman’s frozen body embedded in the ice near a wrecked Order truck. Approaching it automatically unlocks the Rift Incompatible achievement/trophy.

There’s also a Dead Bolt collectible located just behind the truck — grab it before you leave.

Important: If you shot Oddman instead of punching him, his body will still appear here, but the achievement won’t unlock. Replaying the mission through “Mission Replay” will not fix it.

Can You Retry If You Missed It?

Unfortunately, you can’t replay this mission for the achievement using the same character.
However, you can unlock it by:

  • Starting a New Character
  • Or beginning Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, which starts you post-story at Level 30 with all side missions available.

You can also join a co-op session with someone who punched Oddman and still collect the trophy that way.

Quick Tips for Rift Incompatible Achievement Borderlands 4

  • Don’t skip prisoner dialogue — it gives extra story context and rewards.
  • Always melee Oddman, not shoot. Even one bullet voids the achievement.
  • Save before the confrontation if you want a safety net.
  • The “Rift Incompatible” trophy is one of several missable achievements in Borderlands 4, so prioritize it during your first playthrough.

To unlock the “Rift Incompatible” achievement in Borderlands 4, complete Exit Through the Rift Sh, punch Francis Oddman instead of shooting him, and then find his frozen body in Windspear, Terminus Range. One missed button press can lock this achievement permanently for your current character — so make it count. Play Now!
