Grimgera, the Archfiend of Tempests, marks your first major boss encounter in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. This battle caps off the “Howling Tempest” chapter and acts as an early test of your mastery over elemental counters, weak-point gauges, and coordinated team play. Though it’s not the toughest fight in the game, its aerial mobility and ice-based attacks can overwhelm unprepared players. With the right setup and awareness, however, you can turn the storm in your favor.

Recommended Setup and Weaknesses
Recommended Level: 13
Party Members: The Mysterious Construct, Calamo, and Typhan
Weaknesses: Fire, Anti-Air, and Shield Breaker Skills
Rewards: 350 Rupee, Zonaite Longsword
Before heading into the fight, make sure your team loadout matches Grimgera’s weaknesses. Fire attacks melt through its icy defenses, while anti-air and shield-breaking moves keep it vulnerable. Calamo’s elemental fruits, especially his fire fruit combos, are ideal for breaking Grimgera’s guard. Equip the Flame Emitter Zonai Device for sustained fire damage, and keep Fan Devices ready to counter projectiles.
Phase One: Breaking the Ice Shield
Grimgera begins the battle airborne, circling the field while spewing freezing attacks. Its weak point remains protected by an ice barrier that must be shattered before you can inflict serious damage. Start by using anti-air skills or the Flame Emitter to burn away its defenses.
Key Attacks and Counters
- Ice Ray: Grimgera reels back before releasing a straight line of freezing breath. When you see the wind-up animation, dodge sideways and counter from behind to expose its weak-point gauge.
- Ice Daggers: It will fly upward and hurl two icy projectiles toward your location. Either run laterally to evade them or time an Air Skill when it hovers to strike midair.
- Projectile Barrage: Grimgera stops midair and unleashes multiple Ice Daggers. Use the Fan Zonai Device to reflect them back — this counter not only stuns Grimgera but also chips its weak-point gauge significantly.
Tip: Typhan’s Rush Skill (default Y ability) is invaluable when Grimgera swoops downward. Time it correctly to interrupt its dive attack and trigger a heavy counter-damage opportunity.
Phase Two: The Ice Twisters
When Grimgera’s health drops below 50%, it enters its second phase, adding the Ice Twister Lineup to its moveset. You’ll notice pink orbs marking the ground — these indicate where Ice Twisters will spawn. Quickly reposition into an open area without orbs, then move in close once the attack passes to punish its recovery frames.

The same core weaknesses apply here. Keep pressure with fire attacks and Rush Counters to continuously deplete its weak-point gauge. Don’t forget to switch between characters frequently:
- Calamo for elemental bursts,
- Typhan for defensive rush counters, and
- Mysterious Construct for steady melee and Sync Strikes.
Maximizing Damage: Weak-Point Smash & Sync Strikes
Every time you shatter Grimgera’s weak-point gauge, unleash a Weak-Point Smash to deal massive damage. Sync Strikes are equally important — chaining them ensures you maintain offensive momentum and prevents Grimgera from regaining altitude. Pair a Sync Strike with a Flame Emitter to rapidly melt away its remaining health.
Pro Tip: Use the item menu slowdown (hold R) when you’re surrounded or need precise timing. This feature gives you breathing room to line up perfect counters without fully pausing the fight.
Phase Three: Grounded Grimgera
Once Grimgera’s HP dips below roughly 30%, it will crash to the ground and lose its anti-air vulnerability. From here, focus on fire and shield-breaker attacks. This grounded form hits harder but is easier to read. Continue cycling your Rush Skills and fire damage until its health bar empties. A final Weak-Point Smash will finish the Archfiend of Tempests once and for all.
