The Summoner class in Calamity Mod is one of the most rewarding builds you can run, but it punishes every wrong decision harder than any other class. Low defense, strict weapon rules, and a completely reworked whip system after the Brainstorm update mean outdated guides will get you killed fast.

This Calamity Summoner guide covers the best armor, minions, whips, accessories, and full loadouts for every boss stage from Pre-Boss all the way to Endgame. Whether you are just picking up Wulfrum Armor for the first time or pushing through Supreme Calamitas, every stage in this guide is updated for the v2.1.1 Brainstorm changes.

Calamity Brainstorm Update: What It Changed for Summoner Class
Before jumping into loadouts, you need to understand one critical mechanical shift introduced in the Calamity v2.1.1 Brainstorm update: whip tag damage is now multiplicative, not additive.
In older versions, whips added flat damage on top of every minion hit, which made fast but weak minions like the Blade Staff extremely strong. Now, your minion’s base damage is multiplied by the whip’s tag coefficient. This changes which minions are worth using at every stage.
The damage formula now works like this:
DamageFinal = [(DamageBase x (1 + BonusSummon)) + (TagWhip x CoefficientPatch)] x PenaltyClassThere is also a class penalty you must never forget. If you hold any weapon that is not a summoner or classless weapon, your minions deal only 75% of their normal damage. This means carrying a sword or gun for emergencies silently strips away 25% of your DPS. Stay purist and use classless options when you need a backup weapon.
Reforging and Gold Farming
Summoner gear is expensive to reforge. For most minions with low knockback, aim for the Ruthless prefix. Against endgame bosses with high defense, Fabled is better because of the extra armor penetration.
The Calamity reforge system works differently from vanilla. After roughly six clicks at the Goblin Tinkerer, you are almost guaranteed the best possible prefix. You still need plenty of gold to get there, though. These are the most efficient bosses to farm:
- Desert Scourge: Quick kills with a piercing weapon, yields roughly 28 gold per minute.
- Slime God: Selling Purified Gel earns around 13 gold per minute if you can handle the erratic movement.
- Cryogen (Hardmode): Frigid Bars and Souls of Night sell for a strong premium once you hit Hardmode.
Pre-Boss Stage
Before you fight your first boss, your best armor is Wulfrum Armor. It provides 3 defense, 10% summon damage, and one extra minion slot. The set bonus gives you a droid you can toggle between offensive and healing modes using the Wulfrum Controller, which is genuinely useful when your health pool is still tiny.
Weapons:
- Enchanted Knife Staff (5% drop from Golden Crates and Titanium Crates)
- Sun Spirit Staff (crafted with 20 Sandstone Bricks and 2 Stormlion Mandibles)
- Rusty Beacon Prototype (25% drop from Rusty, Hydrothermal, and Sulphurous Crates)
- Snapthorn as your whip (15 Stingers, 3 Vines, 12 Jungle Spores at an Iron Anvil)
Accessories: Spirit Glyph, Wulfrum Battery, Rover Drive, Hermes Boots, Cloud in a Bottle
Use a Summoning Potion whenever you can. It is one of those buffs that stays useful throughout the entire game.
Pre-Perforators / Hive Mind Stage
After clearing Eye of Cthulhu and your world evil bosses, upgrade to Obsidian Armor. It gives 15 defense, 31% summon damage, one extra minion slot, 15% whip speed, and 30% whip range. This is the first time Summoner starts to feel genuinely threatening.
Weapons:
- Imp Staff (17 Hellstone Bars at Iron Anvil)
- Scab Ripper (5 Crimtane Bars, 9 Tissue Samples, Shadewood)
- Polyp Launcher (purchased from Sea King for 2 gold)
- Snapthorn (still your best whip here)
Accessories: Voltaic Jelly, Spirit Glyph, Yellow Horseshoe Balloon, Lightning Boots, Shield of Cthulhu
Buffs: Summoning Potion, Flask of Poison
Defeating The Perforators unlocks Aerialite Ore mining in Sky Islands, which opens the next gear tier.
Pre-Skeletron Stage
Mine Aerialite Ore and switch to Aerospec Armor. It gives 15 defense, 24% summon damage, one extra minion slot, 17% movement speed, a built-in Valkyrie minion, and immunity to fall damage. It is a very comfortable set for mobility-focused fights.
Weapons:
- P-PMA Aqueous Hunter Drone (8 Mysterious Circuitry, 4 Dubious Plating, 4 Aerialite Bars, 7 Sea Prisms)
- Dank Staff (25% drop from Hive Mind, or 33% from its Treasure Bag)
- Polyp Launcher
- Snapthorn
Accessories: Voltaic Jelly, Pygmy Necklace, Bundle of Horseshoe Balloons, Frostspark Boots, Shield of Cthulhu
Buffs: Summoning Potion, Flask of Poison, Bewitching Table
You can take on Queen Bee before Skeletron. Once Skeletron is down, the Dungeon opens, which is a massive gear jump.
Pre-Wall of Flesh Stage
Head to the Abyss, fight Slime God for Purified Gel, and explore the Dungeon. Upgrade to Statigel Armor, which provides 22 defense, 23% summon damage, one extra minion slot, a Baby Slime God minion, and a built-in double jump.
Weapons:
- Herring Staff (10% drop from Ancient Treasure Chests and Hydrothermal Crates)
- Staff of Necrosteocytes (10% drop from Dark Casters)
- Polyp Launcher
- Spinal Tap (90 Bones, 55 Cobwebs at a Work Bench)
Accessories: Jelly-Charged Battery, Pygmy Necklace, Bundle of Horseshoe Balloons, Frostspark Boots, Counter Scarf
Buffs: Summoning Potion, Flask of Poison, Bewitching Table (+1 minion slot), War Table (+1 sentry slot)
Summon the Wall of Flesh by throwing a Guide Voodoo Doll into the Underworld lava. Once it falls, Hardmode begins.
Pre-First Mechanical Boss Stage
Hardmode changes ore progression in Calamity significantly. Only Cobalt and Palladium spawn at first. Later ore tiers unlock after defeating Mechanical Bosses, so you cannot rush through.
Collect Life Fruits in the Underground Jungle until you reach 500 HP. Your armor is now Spider Armor: 20 defense, three extra minion slots, and 28% summon damage.
Important warning about whip stacking: In older Calamity versions, you could cycle multiple whips to stack speed buffs. This has been heavily nerfed. Most tag effects no longer stack. Use one primary whip and maybe one backup for a specific debuff only.
Weapons:
- Ancient Ice Chunk (33% drop from Ice Claspers)
- Sanguine Staff (100% drop from Dreadnautilus)
- Queen Spider Staff (25 Spider Fangs at Mythril Anvil)
- Cool Whip (8 Souls of Light, 8 Souls of Night, 1 Frost Core)
Accessories: Jelly-Charged Battery, Summoner Emblem, The First Shadowflame, Counter Scarf, Terraspark Boots, Fairy Wings
Buffs: Summoning Potion, Flask of Ichor, Bewitching Table, War Table
Also watch out for defense damage in Hardmode. Calamity reduces your defense briefly after each hit. Since Summoner armor already has the lowest defense in the game, getting hit twice by a Hardmode enemy is often fatal.
Also note: the Black Hawk Remote fires classless musket balls. Combined with the Endless Musket Pouch and Crystal Ball, it lets you deal ranged damage without triggering the 25% class penalty. Very useful as a backup option.
Side bosses to clear: Queen Slime, Cryogen, Aquatic Scourge, Brimstone Elemental. Defeat two Mechanical Bosses before moving on.
Pre-Last Mechanical Boss Stage
After two Mechs fall, Adamantite and Titanium become available. Upgrade armor to Daedalus Armor: 37 defense, 28% summon damage, two extra minion slots, 10% movement speed, and a Daedalus Crystal minion.
Weapons:
- Deep Sea Staff (25% drop from Aquatic Scourge, or 33% from its Treasure Bag)
- Dormant Brimseeker (25% from Brimstone Elemental, or 33% from Treasure Bag)
- Orthocera Shell (5% drop from Orthocera)
- Cool Whip
Accessories: Jelly-Charged Battery, Summoner Emblem, The First Shadowflame, Ornate Shield, Terraspark Boots, Flame Wings
Same buff package as previous stage. Once the final Mech falls, Hallowed Bars become available.
Pre-Plantera Stage
With all three Mechs defeated, you have access to Hallowed Bars, Cryonic Bars, and Chlorophyte Ore. You can also craft a Sanguine Tangerine for a permanent +25 HP boost.
To start the Plantera fight, head into the Underground Jungle and break one of the large pink bulbs.
Armor: Hallowed Armor gives 27 defense, 17% summon damage, three extra minion slots, 7% crit chance, 8% movement speed, and a Daedalus Crystal minion.
Weapons:
- Entropy’s Vigil (25% drop from Calamitas Clone, or 33% from Treasure Bag)
- Vengeful Sun Staff (crafted from Sun Spirit Staff, Moon Stone, and 3 each of Soul of Fright, Might, and Sight)
- Cryogenic Staff (purchased from Sea King for 35 gold)
- Durendal as your whip (12 Hallowed Bars)
Accessories: Jelly-Charged Battery, Summoner Emblem, Hallowed Rune, Ornate Shield, Angel Treads, Flame Wings
Buffs: Summoning Potion, Flask of Brimstone, Bewitching Table, War Table
Pre-Golem Stage
Beating Plantera gives you Perennial Ore access, easier Ectoplasm farming, and the Temple Key. Use a Lihzahrd Power Cell at the temple altar to summon Golem.
Upgrade to Fathom Swarmer Armor: 41 defense, 6% damage reduction, 36% summon damage, and four extra minion slots, along with several strong Abyss-related bonuses.
Weapons:
- Plantation Staff (1 Eye of Night, 12 Living Shards)
- Gastric Belcher Staff (25% from Leviathan and Anahita, or 33% from their Treasure Bag)
- Hive Pod
- Morning Star (1% drop from Blue, Hell, and Rusty Armored Bones in the Dungeon)
Accessories: Statis’ Blessing, Starbuster Core, Papyrus Scarab, Asgard’s Valor, Angel Treads, Aureate Booster
Side bosses worth clearing: Anahita, Leviathan, Astrum Aureus.
Pre-Lunatic Cultist Stage
Golem’s death unlocks Scoria Ore and triggers Plague enemy spawns in the Jungle. This is also when you can reasonably challenge Martian Madness, Duke Fishron, and Empress of Light.
Craft the Miracle Fruit here for another +25 HP.
Armor: Plaguebringer Armor gives 32 defense, 45% summon damage, three extra minion slots, 20% maximum health, and 15% movement speed.
Weapons:
- Fuel Cell Bundle (25% from The Plaguebringer Goliath, or 33% from Treasure Bag)
- Raven Staff (6.25% to 12.5% from Pumpking)
- Pulse Turret Remote (12 Mysterious Circuitry, 18 Dubious Plating, 5 Life Alloy, 10 Infected Armor Plating)
- Kaleidoscope as your whip (25% from Empress of Light Treasure Bag). Once you get this whip, it carries you through nearly the rest of the game.
Accessories: Statis’ Blessing, Star-Tainted Generator, Papyrus Scarab, Shield of the High Ruler, Angel Treads, Fishron Wings
Buffs: Summoning Potion, Flask of Brimstone, Bewitching Table, War Table
Pre-Moon Lord Stage
After Lunatic Cultist falls, the Celestial Pillars spawn. Clear all four, craft your pillar weapons, and prepare for Moon Lord. Once the last pillar dies, you have about a minute before the fight begins.
Armor stays as Plaguebringer Armor.
Weapons:
- Wither Blossoms Staff (1 Tundra Flame Blossoms Staff, 15 Plague Cell Canisters)
- Stardust Dragon Staff (18 Stardust Fragments at Ancient Manipulator). Its damage scaling is non-linear: each extra minion slot raises its damage to the power of 1.5, making minion slot stacking extremely valuable here.
- Terraprisma (optional but exceptional: deal 100% of Empress of Light’s damage in daytime to earn it)
- Pulse Turret Remote and Kaleidoscope
Accessories: Statis’ Curse, Star-Tainted Generator, Heart of the Elements, Shield of the High Ruler, Angel Treads, Fishron Wings
Side boss worth clearing: Astrum Deus.
Pre-Providence Stage
After Moon Lord falls, you gain the Celestial Onion, which gives you a seventh accessory slot. You also unlock Luminite Bars, Galactica Singularities, and access to Dragonfolly.
To summon Providence, use a Profaned Core in either the Underworld or the Hallow biome.
Armor: Stardust Armor provides 38 defense, 66% summon damage, five extra minion slots, one sentry slot, 30% whip range, and a Stardust Guardian minion.
Weapons:
- Legion of Celestia (Plantation Staff, Blade Staff, 5 Luminite Bars, 5 Life Alloy, 5 Stardust Fragments)
- Flowers of Mortality (Wither Blossoms Staff, 5 Luminite Bars, 5 Life Alloy, 5 Stardust Fragments)
- Tactical Plague Engine (Black Hawk Remote, Fuel Cell Bundle, 5 Luminite Bars)
- Lunar Portal Staff (20% drop from Moon Lord Treasure Bag)
- Kaleidoscope (still your whip)
Accessories: Statis’ Curse, Star-Tainted Generator, Heart of the Elements, Shield of the High Ruler, Moon Walkers, Ambrosial Ampoule, Blood Pact
Also switch to Tarragon Armor for the fight itself. It provides the Bravery buff, which reduces incoming damage while you are standing still. Great for dodge windows during Providence’s attack patterns.
Pre-Polterghast Stage
Defeating Providence unlocks Uelibloom Ore and Bloodstone. Use the Mark of Providence to summon the Sentinels, then fight Polterghast using a Necroplasmic Beacon in the Dungeon.
Armor: Tarragon Armor gives 72 defense, 73% summon damage, three extra minion slots, 10% movement speed, a damaging life aura, 10% damage reduction, and passive life regeneration.
Weapons:
- Dazzling Stabber Staff (25% or 33% drop from Providence)
- King of Constellations, Tenryu (Stardust Dragon Staff, Dark Shard, Light Shard, 3 Twisting Nethers at a Bookcase)
- Virid Vanguard (Igneous Exaltation, Viral Sprout, 15 Uelibloom Bars)
- Guidelight of Oblivion (5% drop from Scryllar post-Providence)
Accessories: Statis’ Curse, Star-Tainted Generator, Profaned Soul Artifact, Elysian Aegis, Void Striders, Ambrosial Ampoule, Blood Pact
Build a large room in the Dungeon for the Ceaseless Void fight. The same arena will be useful against Polterghast later.
Pre-Devourer of Gods Stage
After Polterghast and The Old Duke, more weapon options open up. Craft the Cosmic Worm to summon Devourer of Gods.
Armor: Bloodflare Armor gives 80 defense, 77% summon damage, three extra minion slots, 17% movement speed, rotating phantom mines, and strong regeneration bonuses.
Weapons:
- Calamari’s Lament (33% drop from Colossal Squid post-Polterghast)
- Mutated Truffle (25% or 33% from The Old Duke)
- Stellar Torus Staff (Xeno Staff, 6 Stardust Fragments, 3 Armored Shells)
- Cadaverous Carrion (25% or 33% from The Old Duke Treasure Bag)
Accessories: Statis’ Curse, Star-Tainted Generator, Phantomic Artifact, Elysian Aegis, Void Striders, Reaper Tooth Necklace, Affliction
Pre-Yharon Stage
Once Devourer of Gods falls, seasonal enemies begin dropping Nightmare Fuel and Endothermic Energy, and Solar Eclipse enemies start dropping Darksun Fragments.
To summon Yharon, use a Blessed Phoenix Egg in the Jungle biome.
Armor: Silva Armor gives 40 defense, 99% summon damage, five extra minion slots, 10% movement speed, a Silva crystal, and 80 bonus maximum health.
Weapons:
- Mirror of Kalandra (shimmer a Magic Mirror or Ice Mirror with 10 Cosmilite Bars and 10 Divine Geodes)
- Endo Hydra Staff (Staff of the Frost Hydra, 8 Cosmilite Bars, 20 Endothermic Energy at a Cosmic Anvil)
- Void Eater Marionette (25% or 33% from Devourer of Gods Treasure Bag)
- Cadaverous Carrion (still strong here)
Accessories: Nucleogenesis, Dark Sun Ring, Phantomic Artifact, Void Striders, Reaper Tooth Necklace, Asgardian Aegis, Affliction
Pre-Supreme Calamitas Stage
After Yharon, Auric Ore generates underground. You can also craft the Sacred Strawberry for a permanent +25 HP here. Depending on your route, you may optionally fight the Exo Mechs before Supreme Calamitas.
Armor: Auric Tesla Armor gives 104 defense, 136% summon damage, six extra minion slots, 10% movement speed, a damaging life aura, and healing leaf orb effects on projectile hits.
Weapons:
- Saros Possession (Sirius, 5 Auric Bars, 15 Darksun Fragments at the Cosmic Anvil)
- Midnight Sun Beacon (Xeno Staff, Lunar Portal Staff, 5 Auric Bars, 3 Life Alloy)
- Yharon’s Kindle Staff (25% or 33% from Yharon Treasure Bag)
- Cadaverous Carrion
Accessories: Nucleogenesis, Dark Sun Ring, Radiance, Wings of Rebirth, Reaper Tooth Necklace, Asgardian Aegis, Chalice of the Blood God
To summon Supreme Calamitas, use Ashes of Calamity on the Altar of the Accursed. Her drops unlock Shadowspec Bars, which are essential for all endgame crafting.
Arena Setup for Supreme Calamitas
This boss forces you into a 159 by 159 tile box. Leaving that area causes her to enrage with 99% damage reduction. Your arena layout here is not optional, it is the difference between winning and dying instantly.
- Dampening Walls: Build walls at least 50 blocks thick on the sides. This causes her large brimstone blasts to detonate before reaching the center, giving you more room to dodge.
- Platform Spacing: Space platforms exactly 30 to 40 tiles apart so you can fall quickly without getting caught during bullet hell phases.
- Teleporter Loops: Wire teleporters at the top and bottom of the box. This creates a falling loop that is the safest way to survive her final phase’s projectile patterns.
Endgame Stage (Boss Rush and Beyond)
Head to the bottom of the Abyss and obtain the Terminus item, which starts Boss Rush. This is the final test.
Armor: Demonshade Armor is the ultimate Summoner set. It gives 150 defense, 45% damage, 100% summon damage, 30% critical strike chance, ten extra minion slots, 30% movement speed, 200 bonus maximum health, and summons a Red Devil that fires tridents dealing 12,000 typeless damage.
The Red Devil fires tridents with no cooldown and never misses. The set also gives minions a 100% critical strike chance, which is a stat Summoners normally have zero access to.
Weapons:
- Ares’ Exoskeleton (100% drop from Ares XB Hekate)
- Upgraded Midnight Sun Beacon (Cryogenic Staff, Blizzard Staff, 5 Shadowspec Bars, 100 Endothermic Energy, 15 Essence of Eleum at Draedon’s Forge)
- Temporal Umbrella (Virid Vanguard, Saros Possession, Umbrella, Top Hat, 5 Shadowspec Bars)
- Atlas Munitions Beacon (100% drop from Thanatos XB Hekate Spine)
Accessories: Nucleogenesis, Dark Sun Ring, Radiance, Wings of Rebirth, Angelic Alliance, Asgardian Aegis, Chalice of the Blood God
Buffs: Summoning Potion, Flask of Crumbling, Bewitching Table, War Table
Exo Mechs Fight Tips
The Exo Mechs do not trap you in a box, but they demand massive horizontal space. Build a bridge that spans the entire world. Thanatos is the most dangerous because he can corner you if you run out of room.
- Celestial Tracers are mandatory for the speed needed to outrun Apollo’s missiles.
- The Midnight Sun Beacon is the best support minion here. Its beams are instant and never miss, even when the mechs are moving at full speed.
Full Whip Progression (Do Not Skip This)
Whips are not optional for Summoner. They apply tag damage that multiplies your minion DPS, and using the wrong whip at the wrong stage is a real damage loss.
| Stage | Whip |
|---|---|
| Early Game | Snapthorn |
| Pre-Wall of Flesh | Spinal Tap |
| Early Hardmode | Cool Whip |
| Pre-Plantera | Durendal |
| Post-Golem | Morning Star |
| Post-Golem onward | Kaleidoscope (best whip in game) |
Best Buffs for Every Stage
Never skip buffs before a boss fight. They are one of the most overlooked sources of power in Summoner builds.
Core Buffs:
- Summoning Potion: +1 minion slot
- Bewitching Table: +1 minion slot (stacks with Summoning Potion)
- Wrath Potion: +10% damage
- Rage Potion: +10% critical strike chance
Flask Progression:
- Flask of Poison (early game)
- Flask of Ichor (reduces enemy defense, great in early Hardmode)
- Flask of Brimstone (mid to late Hardmode)
- Flask of Crumbling (endgame)
Mobility Buffs:
- Swiftness Potion
- Soaring Potion
- War Table: +1 sentry slot
Calamity Summoner Tips and Tricks to Maximize Your Build
- Never hold a non-summoner weapon unless it is classless. You lose 25% minion damage the moment you switch.
- Reforge minions to Ruthless in most stages. Switch to Fabled at endgame for better armor penetration against high-defense bosses.
- Whip stacking is nerfed: Use one main whip. Pick a second only if you need a specific debuff.
- Minion slot stacking is your biggest power spike at every stage. Stack Pygmy Necklace, Papyrus Scarab, and potion effects together.
- Build proper arenas especially for Calamitas and Supreme Calamitas. Horizontal bridges for Devourer of Gods and the Exo Mechs, and a walled box for Supreme Calamitas.
- Revengeance and Death Mode increase enemy health and damage significantly. Everything in this guide applies, but positioning and arena preparation become even more critical at higher difficulties.
FAQs
What is the best armor for Summoner in Calamity Mod?
It depends on your stage. Wulfrum Armor works pre-boss, Spider Armor is your first big Hardmode spike, and Demonshade Armor is the best endgame set. It gives 150 defense, 100% summon damage, 10 extra minion slots, and summons a Red Devil that deals 12,000 typeless damage per hit.
Does holding a non-summoner weapon reduce minion damage in Calamity?
Yes. If you hold any weapon that is not a summoner or classless weapon, your minions deal only 75% of their normal damage. Always use classless options like the Black Hawk Remote if you need a backup weapon to avoid triggering this penalty.
What is the best whip in Calamity Mod for Summoner?
Kaleidoscope is the best whip in the game for Summoner. It drops from the Empress of Light Treasure Bag at 25% and carries you from Post-Golem all the way through the endgame. Get it as soon as possible.
Can you still stack whips in the Calamity Brainstorm update?
No. Whip stacking was heavily nerfed in the Brainstorm update. Most tag effects no longer stack when you cycle multiple whips. Stick to one primary whip and only use a second if you specifically need a certain debuff on an enemy.
What buffs should a Summoner always use before boss fights in Calamity?
At minimum, use Summoning Potion and Bewitching Table together for two extra minion slots, Wrath Potion for 10% damage, and a Flask scaled to your current stage such as Ichor in early Hardmode and Crumbling at endgame. These buffs make a noticeable difference in every fight.
