Blizzard has launched a limited-time event in Diablo 4 that adds a wicked twist to your Tree of Whispers grind. Titled the Gift of the Tree, this event rewards players with bonus loot caches for turning in Grim Favors—making it a prime opportunity for anyone looking to boost their seasonal progression.

What Is the Gift of the Tree?
The Gift of the Tree is a temporary buff that appears on your character while the event is active. You’ll spot a white tree icon indicating the effect is live.
While active, every time you turn in 10 Grim Favors to the Tree of Whispers, you’ll receive a bonus cache called the Gift of the Tree Cache. These extra caches—also referred to as Chaos Caches—are essentially randomized loot boxes containing items ranging from common gear to highly valuable Ancestral-tier rewards.
Event Duration: The event is live until July 22, 2025, at 1:00 PM EST / 10:00 PM PST.
How It Works: Tree of Whispers & Grim Favors
If you’re unfamiliar with the Tree of Whispers system, here’s a quick refresher:
- Grim Favors are earned by completing “Whispers”—mini-objectives scattered across the map.
- These appear as icons bordered in pale pink, pink, or red:
- Pale Pink: 1 Favor
- Pink: 3 Favors
- Red: 5 Favors
The darker the red, the more Grim Favors you earn per task.
- Once you’ve collected 10 Grim Favors, return to the Tree of Whispers (or its outposts) to redeem them for one of three offered caches.
Access Requirement: You must complete the campaign or use the “Skip Campaign” toggle during seasonal character creation to unlock the Tree of Whispers system.
You can also redeem your Grim Favors at “Ravens of the Tree” scattered across the map—not just at the Tree itself.

During this event, you get a bonus Gift of the Tree Cache with every redemption, no matter which cache type you choose.
What’s Inside the Gift of the Tree Cache?
Unlike standard Whispers caches that are themed toward specific gear types or resources, Gift of the Tree caches (Chaos Caches) are grab-bags filled with completely random loot. This makes them valuable for players seeking:
- Ancestral items
- Randomized legendary drops
- Gear variety across classes
Bonus: This event is ideal for progressing the “Chaotic Whispers” achievement, which requires earning 10 Chaos Caches from the Tree of Whispers.
Bonus XP Tip: The bonus cache grants the same XP as the main cache, making it an effective method for leveling alternate characters.
Should You Participate in This Event?
The Gift of the Tree event offers solid value, particularly for new or returning players, but its relevance to the current season varies depending on your goals.
Worth it if:
- You’re leveling a new seasonal character
- You want to farm Chaos Caches for the Chaotic Whispers achievement
- You’re still collecting Ancestral gear or enjoy high-variance loot rewards
Skip if:
- You’re focused on Escalating Nightmares or Horadric Strongrooms, which are central to Season 9’s theme
- Your build is already optimized and you prefer targeted farming
- You’re short on time and prioritize predictable, deterministic rewards
Although the event delivers bonus loot and XP benefits, it feels somewhat disconnected from Season 9’s core gameplay loop. With most players currently prioritizing Nightmare Dungeons over Whispers, the event may not align with the typical endgame grind.
Note: The event also launched alongside Patch 2.3.1, which caused widespread issues such as crashes, lag, and rollbacks across platforms. These technical problems dampened player enthusiasm and overshadowed the event’s rollout.
Tips to Maximize Your Chaos Cache Gains
To make the most out of the event:
- Farm in groups: Clear Whisper zones faster and rack up Grim Favors efficiently.
- Track the best Whispers: Prioritize red-bordered objectives—they give the most Favors.
- Avoid bugged caches: Stick to general or targeted cache types (e.g., Armor or Weapons) until Blizzard confirms fixes to Greater Dungeon Keys.
- Use downtime wisely: Hop into Whisper events while waiting for Escalating Nightmare resets.
Leveling Strategy: If you’re leveling an alt, this is one of the best opportunities all season. Stacking caches—even opening stored ones during the event—can push characters into the 40s or 60s quickly due to bonus XP.

The Gift of the Tree event in Diablo 4 is a free shot at extra loot for doing what you already do in-game: farming Grim Favors. While not perfectly aligned with the current seasonal theme, it’s still a welcome addition—especially for those catching up or rerolling alts.
Whether you embrace the chaos for the loot, or stick with Nightmare dungeons for progression, the choice is yours. Just don’t forget to turn in those Grim Favors before July 22.
Note: The bonus cache is only granted at the moment you turn in Grim Favors—not when opening older caches. If you’ve been saving up, make sure to redeem them during the event window.
