Google AdSense to Replace Auto Ads Ad Load Slider with Advanced Banner Ad Controls

Google has announced an upcoming change to AdSense Auto Ads that will give publishers more precise control over banner advertisements. The company will replace the current ad load slider with a new Advanced Settings system that allows detailed adjustments to banner ad placement and spacing.

The update focuses on improving flexibility for website owners who rely on Auto Ads. Instead of using a single slider to control ad density, publishers will soon be able to manage specific parameters such as maximum ads, spacing between ads, and additional placements on article pages.

Google Is Removing the Ad Load Slider

Google confirmed that it will remove the ad load slider from Auto Ads settings. The current slider allows publishers to broadly increase or decrease the number of ads shown across a website.

While simple, the slider often limits control over how ads appear within individual pages. Many publishers reported that the setting could place too many ads in some sections and too few in others.

To address this, Google is introducing Advanced Settings for banner ads, which will replace the older “fine-tune your ads” controls.

New Advanced Settings Give More Control

The new system introduces multiple controls designed to help publishers manage the exact structure of banner ads on their pages.

Key options include:

  • Maximum number of ads – Lets publishers decide how many in-page ads can appear on a page.
  • Minimum distance between ads – Controls the spacing between banner placements.
  • Find more ad placements on article pages – Allows Auto Ads to detect additional opportunities within long content pages.

These options provide a more precise approach compared to the older slider, which adjusted ad density using only a single scale.

What Happens to Existing Ad Settings

Google stated that existing Auto Ads configurations will migrate automatically when the update launches.

If a site currently uses the ad load slider, AdSense will convert that value into the new advanced settings. The system will estimate the appropriate number of ads and spacing based on the previous configuration.

However, Google recommends reviewing the new values after migration because the conversion may not perfectly match previous behavior.

Publishers who already use fine-tune ad controls will see those settings transferred directly into the new Advanced Settings panel.

Timeline for the AdSense Update

Google plans to roll out the changes on April 16, 2026.

Until that date:

  • Publishers can continue using the ad load slider.
  • The new system will appear once the rollout completes.
  • Existing settings will automatically convert to the new configuration.

After the launch, the ad load slider will no longer be available inside the Auto Ads interface.

For content-heavy sites such as blogs and news platforms, this update may offer better control over ad density and page performance.
