Hero Cards are one of the biggest additions to Clash Royale in recent updates, bringing new abilities, new deck strategies, and a fresh layer of depth to competitive play. Unlike standard troops or Champions, Heroes are enhanced versions of existing cards, each with its own ability you can activate during battle.
What Are Hero Cards?
Hero Cards are upgraded variations of classic troops such as the Knight, Giant, Mini P.E.K.K.A., and Musketeer. They behave like regular units on the field but come with a special ability button similar to Champion abilities.
A Hero’s ability costs Elixir, activates instantly, and stays available for as long as the Hero is alive. Every Hero has a unique gameplay identity—some gain levels over time, some set up defensive tools, and some control the battlefield with displacement effects.
Heroes share Champion slots, which means your deck can only include two total from this combined category.
Step 1: Reach the Required Arena to Unlock Hero Slots
Before you can obtain or use any Hero, you must unlock Hero slots on Trophy Row:
- Arena 15: Unlocks your first Hero slot
- Arena 25: Unlocks your second Hero slot
You must reach at least Arena 15 before Hero Fragments, Hero Boxes, and Hero unlock events become relevant.
Step 2: Get Your First Hero Through the Free Event (200 Fragments)
Once you reach Arena 15 or above, Clash Royale triggers a special event that gives you enough fragments to unlock your first Hero.
- The event rewards 200 Hero Fragments, which is exactly the amount required to summon one Hero.
- The event has no listed timer, meaning all eligible players above Arena 15 can claim it.
This is the fastest and simplest way to get your very first Hero for free.
Step 3: Earn Hero Fragments from Hero Boxes
After getting your first Hero, additional Hero unlocks depend mainly on Hero Boxes.
How Hero Boxes Work
Hero Boxes contain Hero Fragments. As you climb arenas, your Hero Box upgrades, increasing both stars and fragment rewards.
Where to get Hero Boxes:
- Seasonal events
- The free track of Pass Royale
Each box drops a random number of fragments. When you reach 200 fragments, you unlock a new random Hero.
Duplicate Hero Drops
If you pull a Hero you already own:
- You receive additional fragments
- You also gain copies of that Hero’s base card
Step 4: Unlock Heroes Through Pass Royale
Some seasons place specific Heroes inside Pass Royale.
Example:
- Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A. is available inside the premium Pass Royale during the release month.
Players below Arena 15 (who cannot use Heroes yet) are given Wild Evo Shards instead.
How to Know If a Card Has a Hero Version
In your deck screen, cards that have a Hero variant display a yellow stone above their art.
- Solid yellow stone: Hero unlocked
- Grayed-out stone: Hero version exists but not unlocked yet
When you place the Hero into your Hero slot, the card changes to its Hero appearance automatically.
Current Heroes and Their Abilities

Hero Knight — Triumphant Taunt
- Cost: 3 Elixir
- Draws nearby enemies (including towers) to attack him
- Gains a shield before taking damage
Hero Giant — Heroic Hurl
- Cost: 5 Elixir
- Throws the highest-HP enemy troop into the opposite lane
- Deals landing damage and stun
Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A. — Breakfast Boost
- Cost: 4 Elixir
- Gains one “pancake level” per attack
- Can stack up to +5 temporary levels
Hero Musketeer — Trusty Turret
- Cost: 4 Elixir
- Summons a turret in front of her
- Deals burst impact damage, then autofires until destroyed
How Many Heroes Can You Use?
You can place up to two in your deck, but they must fit into the Champion/Hero slots:
- Two Heroes
- One Hero + One Champion
- Two Champions
You cannot run three from this category.
