How Friendship Works
Mii relationships progress through distinct stages: strangers, acquaintances, friends, and great friends. Each stage unlocks new social events and interactions between your Miis.
The system moves forward through repeated contact. Every time two Miis talk, help each other, or solve a shared problem, the game registers that interaction and slowly pushes their relationship to the next level. There is no instant shortcut, but you can absolutely control the pace by being proactive.
How to Make Miis Become Friends Faster
1. Drag Miis Together Constantly
The single most effective method is manual placement. Hold A to pick up a Mii and place them next to the Mii you want them to befriend. This immediately triggers a conversation between the two.
Do this as often as possible. The more conversations they have, the faster their relationship develops. Do not wait for Miis to naturally wander near each other since that slows things down significantly.
2. Solve Their Ponderings (Problems)
Watch for orange thought bubbles appearing above Miis’ heads. Tapping on these triggers a pondering event, where the Mii needs help with something related to their relationship. Common pondering problems include:
- Struggling to come up with a conversation topic
- Wondering about the nature of their relationship with another Mii
- Wanting to deepen a bond with a specific Mii
Solving these ponderings gives a meaningful boost to friendship progress. Prioritize these events whenever they appear.
3. Help Miis When They Are Stuck or in Trouble
If a Mii trips, gets stuck, or needs physical help, drag their friend over to assist them. Helping a Mii during a moment of need builds friendship faster than a standard conversation. Keep an eye out for these moments, especially in the early stages of a relationship.
4. Check on Your Miis Regularly
Friendship milestones often trigger through special cutscenes that appear when you actively check on a Mii. Simply having two Miis interact in the background without checking on them can delay these milestone events.
Log in often, tap on Miis with thought bubbles, and watch for the friendship confirmation cutscenes. These cutscenes mark a Mii relationship leveling up to the next stage.
5. Adjust Their Personalities
Each Mii has a personality that influences how compatible they are with other Miis. If two Miis seem particularly slow to warm up, try adjusting one or both of their personalities through the Edit Mii menu.
Miis with compatible personalities tend to interact more positively. Note that even Miis within the same personality group (like all personalities under the Considerate umbrella) can still clash due to individual quirks, so some experimentation may be necessary.
How to Check Friendship Levels
You can track relationship progress through three methods:
- Mii Profile: Select a Mii to open their profile. It shows a short ranked list of their strongest relationships at the top.
- Relationship Rankings: On a Mii’s profile, press Y and select Relationship Rankings for a full list of all their relationships, including Miis they have not yet met.
- Hover During Group Interactions: Hovering your cursor over Miis who are talking in a group shows individual relationship diagrams for each Mii in the conversation.
Why Friendship Matters
Getting Miis to the friend stage unlocks several important events:
- Increased interactions: Friends spend more time together on the island without your input, which passively generates Warm Fuzzies to develop your island further.
- Moving in together: Once two Miis reach the Great Friends stage, one of them may ask to move in with the other. A special cutscene can play where the Mii convinces the other to share a home.
- Romance: Miis cannot start a romantic relationship until they are friends first. If two Miis are not falling in love, an underdeveloped friendship is almost always the reason.
Can You Force Two Miis to Become Friends?
No. There is no mechanic to force an instant friendship between two Miis. The game’s relationship system is partly driven by chance, and some pairs will take longer than others regardless of how often you bring them together.
