In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, you’re not just carrying cargo across rough terrain—you’re managing Sam’s basic needs too. One of those needs is urination. It might sound funny, but relieving Sam isn’t just for laughs. It actually plays a role in survival and how you interact with the world around you.

Why Sam Needs to Urinate in Death Stranding 2
Whenever Sam drinks from his canteen or the energy drinks in your private room, his urination meter slowly starts to rise. If you don’t take care of it, and it hits the 1000 mark, Sam will start to feel uncomfortable and may even lose some efficiency.
Think of it like stamina management—it’s better to go before it becomes a problem.

How to Urinate in a Private Room
The easiest and safest place to pee is inside a private room. You’ll find these in distribution centers, bunkers, and safehouses.
Here’s what to do:
- Enter the private room.
- After Sam wakes up and sits on the bed, look to your left.
- You’ll see a door that leads to the bathroom.
- Interact with it, choose “Urinate,” and the cutscene will handle the rest.
In Death Stranding 2, peeing in private no longer gives you EX grenades. Instead, you get Chiral Crystals, which you can use to upgrade gear or carry more weight.
How to Urinate in the Open
Out on the road with no bathroom nearby? No problem—you can pee anywhere (almost).
To do this:
- Hold the right D-pad to bring up the tool wheel.
- Move the stick down to the urinate icon.
- Press X to select it.
- Hold L2 to aim, then R2 to let it go.
Sam will always turn away from the camera, and he won’t go near people, structures, or graves. There are limits too:
You can’t pee within 20 meters of buildings with holograms, 75 meters of a carried body, or 50 meters from a corpse.
What Happens When You Pee Outside
Peeing in the open isn’t just about emptying the meter—it affects the world around you too.
- A mushroom will grow where you pee.
- These mushrooms can be seen by other players and liked.
- If enough people urinate in the same spot, the mushrooms grow into clusters.
- Eventually, they’ll attract cryptobiotes, which you can collect to restore Sam’s blood.
Compared to cryptobiote hives, these player-made colonies can give you even more resources.
It’s a small way to connect with other players and leave behind something useful.
Is Pee Still a Weapon in DS2?
In the first Death Stranding, peeing could create EX grenades used to fight BTs. That’s not the case in the sequel.
There are no more urine-based grenades in DS2.
But back then, if Sam was really tired, he could even produce an upgraded grenade that mixed blood with urine to deal extra damage. That mechanic is gone now.
Still, collecting cryptobiotes from mushrooms can help you prep for dangerous encounters by keeping your health topped up.
What You Can’t Do While Peeing in DS2
Sam won’t just pee anywhere. The game has rules to keep things respectful and immersive. You can’t:
- Urinate near NPCs or hologram structures
- Pee close to graves or story-critical areas
- Turn the camera to watch—Sam always looks away
These small touches keep the system grounded while still letting you interact with the world in unusual ways.
Urinating in Death Stranding 2 might sound like a side joke, but it actually matters. It helps manage Sam’s stamina, lets you grow useful resources, and even leaves behind signs of your journey for other players to see.
And here’s a neat detail: if you zoom in on the mushrooms you grow, the white dots are tiny thumbs-up icons—just another clever Kojima touch.
So don’t ignore that full bladder. It’s another way to stay connected in this strange and lonely world.
