Indus Water Treaty Between India And Pakistan

Indus Waters Treaty between two counties of India and Pakistan for the distribution of water which negotiated by the World Bank to use the water available in the Indus System of Rivers located in Indian soil.

Background about Indus Water Treaty Between India Pakistan 

The Indus Waters Treaty was signed by the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and the President of Pakistan Ayub Khan in Karachi on September 19, 1960.

The Indus Waters Treaty Agreement is about sharing the water of 6 rivers – Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum between two countries, i e., India and Pakistan

As per Indus Water Treaty the control over three eastern rivers – Ravi, Beas and Sutlej was given to India, and the control over three western rivers – Indus, Jhelum and Chenab was given to Pakistan.

As per Treaty the water mean flow of 33 million acre-feet (MAF) was given to India, while the water mean flow of 80 million acre-feet (MAF ) was given to Pakistan. As Pakistan receive more water flow from India, The Indus Waters Treaty allowed India to use western rivers water for limited irrigation use and unrestricted use for industrial, domestic, non consumptive uses and for power generation, while laying down precise regulations for India to build projects.

Since the existence of The Indus Waters Treaty in 1960, India and Pakistan have not engaged in any water wars. The Indus Waters treaty is considered to be one of the most successful water sharing endeavors in the world.

According to The Indus Waters treaty, the eastern rivers are allocated for exclusive water use by India after the permitted water uses in Pakistan before they cross finally into Pakistan, and the Pakistan has exclusive water use of the western rivers after the permitted water uses in India.
