Mega Evolutions remain some of the most powerful features in Pokemon GO, and with the Tales of Transformation season, trainers finally get access to Mega Metagross. This Steel/Psychic powerhouse is not only a fan favorite but also one of the strongest Mega Pokemon available. Here’s everything you need to know about how to get Mega Metagross, its counters, best moves, and shiny availability.

How to Get Mega Metagross
Mega Metagross makes its debut as a Mega Raid Boss during special Raid Day events and throughout the Tales of Transformation season.
- Raid Battles: Defeat Mega Metagross in Mega Raids with a group of at least four well-prepared trainers. Once the raid is cleared, a guaranteed Metagross encounter will appear at the raid location.
- Mega Energy: To Mega Evolve your Metagross, you’ll need Mega Metagross Energy, earned by repeatedly completing Mega Raids. The required amount will be displayed on your Metagross’ Pokémon page.
- Existing Metagross: If you already have a Metagross, you can use the collected Mega Energy to evolve it directly.
- Evolution Path: For new players, Metagross comes from evolving Beldum → Metang (25 Candy) → Metagross (100 Candy), so be sure to farm Beldum Candy if you don’t already own one.
Can Mega Metagross Be Shiny?
Yes — but with a catch. Trainers who already own a Shiny Metagross can Mega Evolve it into a Shiny Mega Metagross. For everyone else, the chance to encounter a Shiny comes only through participating in multiple Mega Metagross Raids and rolling against its standard shiny odds.

Best Counters Raids
Mega Metagross is a Steel/Psychic-type, leaving it weak to Dark, Fire, Ghost, and Ground moves. Building a raid team around these weaknesses gives you the best chance of success.
Top counters include:
- Dawn Wings Necrozma with Shadow Claw + Moongeist Beam (Ghost)
- Mega Charizard Y with Fire Spin + Overheat (Fire)
- Primal Groudon with Mud Shot + Earthquake (Ground)
- Mega Tyranitar with Bite + Brutal Swing (Dark)
- Mega Garchomp with Mud Shot + Earthquake (Ground)
Having a well-rounded team that matches typing and leverages STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) ensures maximum damage output.
Stats, CP Ranges & Legacy Moves
- Typing: Steel / Psychic
- Max CP: 5552 (at Level 50, perfect IVs)
- Best Moveset: Bullet Punch (Fast) + Meteor Mash (Charged) — note that Meteor Mash is a legacy move and typically requires an Elite Charged TM unless re-released during events.
- Boosted Weather: Snow and Windy
Post-Raid Metagross CP ranges:
- Level 20 (no weather): 2078 – 2166 CP
- Level 25 (Snow/Windy boost): 2598 – 2708 CP
Is Mega Metagross Worth It?
Absolutely. With incredible stats and access to Meteor Mash, Mega Metagross becomes one of the strongest Steel-type attackers in the game. It has excellent resistances, high bulk, and powerful offensive presence, making it useful for both raids and certain PvP scenarios.
