Square Enix has officially announced Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse, the next entry in its paranormal mystery adventure series. The game will launch on Nintendo Switch on February 19, with digital pre-orders opening through the Nintendo eShop.
The announcement arrived during the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, confirming that the franchise continues nearly three years after the release of Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo.
A New Mystery Set Around Japan’s Ise Bay
Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse shifts its focus to Ise Bay, a real coastal region between Japan’s Mie and Aichi prefectures. Players step into the role of Yuza Minakuchi, a young pearl diver who becomes entangled in a disturbing mystery after encountering another version of himself on the ocean floor.
That discovery triggers a chain of supernatural events tied to a centuries-old mermaid legend. As the story unfolds, Yuza crosses paths with several island residents, including a girl suffering from memory loss, treasure hunters chasing rumors, and a woman investigating unexplained drownings. Each character connects to the curse in different ways, pushing the narrative forward through multiple perspectives.

Investigation-Driven Gameplay With Supernatural Elements
The game follows a detective-style structure similar to its predecessor but introduces new mechanics shaped by its island setting. Players investigate by questioning locals, piecing together folklore, and exploring underwater areas during diving sequences. These sections allow players to uncover clues hidden beneath the surface of Ise Bay, expanding the investigative scope beyond traditional dialogue-based exploration.
The visual novel format emphasizes story choices, character relationships, and branching paths, while supernatural themes remain central to the experience.
Key Creative Staff Return for the Sequel
Several core members from the original game return for The Mermaid’s Curse. Takanari Ishiyama reprises his role as writer, Gen Kobayashi returns as character designer, and Hidenori Iwasaki once again composes the soundtrack. Their involvement signals continuity in tone, storytelling, and atmosphere for longtime fans of the series.
Building on a Well-Received Foundation
The original Paranormasight launched in March 2023 on Switch and PC and earned strong critical and player reception, particularly for its use of authentic Japanese folklore and real-world locations. That foundation sets high expectations for the sequel, especially with its new coastal setting and expanded investigative design.
