Why Rishabh Pant Suspended: Over-Rate Penalties, and Impact on Delhi Capitals Performance

SPORTS NEWS- FDAYTALK

The BCCI suspended Rishabh Pant, captain of Delhi Capitals, for one match due to a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct.

The suspension was a result of the team maintaining a slow over-rate during their match against Rajasthan Royals on May 7, 2024.

Pant had already received two over-rate penalties this IPL season, and this third one caused him to miss the crucial match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Along with the suspension, Pant had to pay a fine of ₹30 lakh. Each player of the Playing XI also faced a fine of ₹12 lakh or 50% of their match fees, whichever was less.

Cricket legends like Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting, who are part of Delhi Capitals, attempted to overturn Pant’s suspension.

They argued that factors like extreme heat and time taken to retrieve balls hit for sixes caused the slow over-rate. However, the BCCI did not accept these arguments.

This suspension sparked discussions about the IPL’s Code of Conduct and the impact of such penalties on the teams and the tournament.

Despite the setback, Delhi Capitals and Rishabh Pant are looking forward to bouncing back stronger in the upcoming matches.
