Foreigners can’t apply for a study permit without an acceptance letter, so check the start date and application process of your preferred course (program) well in advance to make sure you have enough time to get an acceptance letter and complete the study permit application.
Eligibility Requirements to apply for a Study permit in Canada
- Get an Acceptance Letter: In order to apply for a Canadian study permit, you must have an Acceptance Letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

If our study permit is approved, authorities will issue you a Port of Entry Introduction Letter. We will not receive a study permit until we arrive at a Canadian Port of Entry (POE).
Once you reach a Port of Entry (POE) in Canada, show the Port of Entry Introduction Letter to the immigration official and get your study permit.
A study permit is not a visa. We need a travel visa in order to travel to the Port of Entry (POE) in Canada.
When our study permit application is approved, the Visa Officer will issue a travel visa authorising us to travel to Canada.
