One Piece has always been full of amazing characters who rise above the rest. For years, fans have seen Luffy as the biggest prodigy in the series. But according to new reveals from Eiichiro Oda and some fascinating new lore, there’s someone else who might be even more gifted—and it’s not Luffy.
Shanks Is A Bigger Prodigy Than Fans Realized
Luffy’s the hero of One Piece and has shown massive growth since the beginning. He’s unlocked powerful forms like Gear 4 and, most recently, Gear 5, which lets him fight on a whole new level. Many fans thought nobody could top his talent.
But Oda has confirmed that Shanks is an even bigger prodigy. While Luffy had to train hard for years, Shanks learned insane techniques just by watching. For example, he picked up Roger’s ultimate attack, Divine Departure, without anyone teaching him. Even Roger’s own crew was stunned that Shanks could copy it.
“Shanks was such a genius that Roger Pirates were all surprised that Shanks learned Divine Departure by himself without instruction from Roger, and no one else in Roger’s pirates could even mimic it.” — Oda
Shanks also became a Yonko without using any Devil Fruit powers at all, proving how strong his Haki is. Oda calls him the “Child of Destiny,” hinting that he’s meant for something huge in the final part of the story.
Fans are excited to see Shanks finally step into the spotlight during the Final Saga, especially as the World Government starts making bold moves.
Loki Might Be Another Hidden Prodigy
While Shanks is stealing headlines, new information has introduced another potential prodigy: Loki from Elbaf.
Loki has a natural grasp of something called “God Haki,” which is basically the ultimate level of Conqueror’s Haki. This advanced power lets the user affect reality itself, even weakening or stopping Devil Fruit users’ regeneration. That’s way beyond what we’ve seen from Luffy so far.
Fourteen years ago, Loki even survived a deadly attack involving Emu and the God Knights, possibly using both his Haki and the mysterious powers of a forbidden fruit he supposedly ate. Some think he could become the second strongest member of the Straw Hats if he joined, right after Luffy.
Luffy has actually asked Loki to join his crew. But Zoro and Sanji are hesitant, partly because Loki is so big he’s “larger than the Sunny” and because they think he could overshadow everyone else with his power.

Whether Loki joins the Straw Hats or goes his own way, it’s clear he’s going to play a role in the final war, especially since he hates the Celestial Dragons as much as Luffy does.
More Straw Hats Could Unlock God Haki
These new revelations suggest that powerful Haki will be a big focus in the Final Saga. Oda has hinted that other Straw Hat members might unlock new forms of Conqueror’s Haki—or even God Haki—in the coming battles:
- Zoro has apparently been leaking Conqueror’s Haki without even knowing it. His training to sense the “breath of all things” might help him reach God Haki levels fast.
- Sanji might awaken Conqueror’s Haki during a crucial moment to protect his friends.
- Nami and Usopp have both shown hints that they might unlock Haki someday, despite being more ordinary than their crewmates.
Shanks, Loki, and What’s Next
With Shanks confirmed as a true prodigy and Loki emerging as another powerhouse, One Piece is heading into some of its most intense chapters yet. Fans can expect legendary battles and major reveals as the Final Saga unfolds.
While Luffy is still the series’ heart and hero, it’s becoming clearer than ever that he’s not the only genius shaping the future of the seas—and possibly the world itself.
