What Is Frost in PEAK?

Frost is a stamina-draining effect in PEAK that makes climbing increasingly dangerous. It gradually reduces your maximum stamina, making it harder to maintain your grip, execute long climbs, or escape hazards.

As your maximum stamina decreases, you become more prone to falling and less able to survive dangerous situations.

If Frost builds up too much, it can drain your stamina completely, leading to falls and instant death.

How Frost Occurs in PEAK

Frost From the Fog

In PEAK, a thick, creeping fog acts as a soft timer that steadily ascends the mountain while you climb. If you fall behind and become caught in this fog:

  • Frost will begin to take effect, steadily draining your stamina over time.
  • Remaining too long in the fog will eventually drain your stamina completely, resulting in death.

Frost in the Alpine Biome

Frost also appears in the Alpine zone during Blizzards, which are random, short weather events that last less than a minute.

Besides blizzards, touching icy surfaces and glowing blue crystals can also inflict Frost immediately.

How to Stop Frost

The strategy to stop Frost differs depending on where you’re encountering it.

Avoiding Frost from the Fog

  • Climb faster: Maintain a steady pace and avoid falling behind the fog’s progression as it rises.
  • Minimize mistakes: Efficient movement helps keep you above the fog line.
  • Switch Difficulty: For a slower, exploratory experience, disable the fog entirely by selecting the Tenderfoot difficulty at the Gate Kiosk in the airport. This removes the fog and prevents Frost from forming.

Avoiding Frost in the Alpine (Blizzards and Ice)

When facing Frost in the Alpine biome:

  • Seek shelter behind solid terrain like rock formations or deep crevices. Trees and smaller environmental objects will not protect you.
  • Use heat sources, including:
    • Faerie Lanterns found at Statues
    • Lanterns located at the Shore or as loot (especially useful for group play)
    • Heat Packs found as loot, which can remove a portion of your Frost buildup and provide immediate relief

Quick Tips to Tackle Frost

  • Remain ahead of the fog by planning your route and avoiding backtracking.
  • Switch to Tenderfoot difficulty if your pace is slow, to climb without time pressure.
  • Hide behind large objects during blizzards, and avoid contact with icy surfaces and glowing crystals that cause Frost.
  • Use Lanterns, Faerie Lanterns, and Heat Packs to reduce Frost buildup and stay warm.
