SSI Income Limits 2027: Payment Amounts, Exclusions, Resource Rules and Free Calculator

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) does not use one fixed income cutoff. Instead, the Social Security Administration (SSA) takes your countable income and subtracts it from a federal maximum. What remains is your monthly payment. For 2027, that maximum rises with the 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), so the numbers below matter for anyone who receives SSI or plans to apply.

Does SSI Have an Income Limit in 2027? Maximum Payment for Individuals and Couples

The federal benefit rate (FBR) is the most SSI can pay you each month before your own income reduces it. SSA published the new amounts in its 2027 COLA fact sheet.

Category Last year 2027
Eligible individual $994 $1,029
Eligible couple (combined) $1,491 $1,544

The couple amount covers both spouses together. It does not pay $1,544 to each person. Some states add their own supplement on top of the federal amount, and you can see how SSA applies the federal rate on its SSI cost-of-living page.

The higher rate takes effect with the January 2027 payment. Because January 1 is a federal holiday, SSA sends that payment on December 31. It is your regular January payment arriving early, not an extra deposit.

How SSA Calculates Countable Income for SSI in 2027

SSA does not count every dollar you receive. It applies exclusions first, and only the leftover amount reduces your payment. SSA lays out these rules on its SSI income page.

Unearned income includes Social Security benefits, pensions, veterans benefits, unemployment payments, interest, and cash gifts. SSA excludes the first $20 of your combined monthly income. After that, each dollar of unearned income cuts your SSI by one dollar.

Earned income comes from wages or self-employment. SSA excludes $65 of your monthly earnings, then counts only half of what remains. If you have no unearned income, the $20 general exclusion also applies to your earnings.

SSA applies the exclusions in this order:

  1. The Student Earned Income Exclusion, if you qualify
  2. The $20 general exclusion, applied to unearned income first and then to any earned income
  3. The $65 earned income exclusion
  4. The one-half reduction on remaining earned income

SSI Payment Examples for 2027: Wages, Benefits or Both

These examples use the 2027 individual rate of $1,029 and assume no state supplement.

Wages only. You earn $400 a month and have no other income. SSA subtracts $20 and $65, which leaves $315. It counts half, or $157.50. Your SSI payment is $1,029 minus $157.50, which equals $871.50.

Unearned income only. You receive $500 a month from Social Security. SSA subtracts the $20 exclusion and counts $480. Your SSI payment is $1,029 minus $480, which equals $549.

Both types of income. You receive $500 in Social Security and earn $600 in wages. SSA applies the $20 exclusion to your unearned income, so $480 counts. It then subtracts $65 from your wages, leaving $535, and counts half of that, or $267.50. Your total countable income is $747.50, so your SSI payment is $281.50.

Living arrangements can lower these figures further. If someone else pays for your food or shelter, SSA may reduce your payment. Report any change in where you live or who pays your bills.

SSI Student Earned Income Exclusion 2027: $2,500 Monthly, $10,080 Yearly

Students under age 22 who attend school regularly can shield extra wages before the other exclusions apply. SSA's rules for this benefit appear in POMS SI 00820.510.

Student exclusion Last year 2027
Monthly maximum $2,410 $2,500
Yearly maximum $9,730 $10,080

The yearly cap crosses $10,000 for the first time. You use the monthly amount until you reach the yearly limit. The age and school attendance rules stay the same.

SSI Resource Limit 2027: $2,000 for Individuals, $3,000 for Couples

Income is only half of the SSI test. You must also keep your countable resources at or below these limits, which SSA explains on its SSI resources page:

  • $2,000 for an individual
  • $3,000 for a couple

Federal law sets these caps, so the COLA does not raise them. Your payment standard grows each year while the savings limit stays put.

Not everything you own counts as a resource. SSA generally excludes the home you live in and one vehicle you use for transportation. If your savings sit close to the limit, check how SSA treats a specific asset before you move money or sell property. A resource overage in even one month can stop your payment.

SSI vs SSDI vs Retirement Earnings Limits in 2027: Which Number Applies to You

Several 2027 figures circulate at the same time, and each belongs to a different program. Using the wrong one can lead to bad decisions.

  • Retirement earnings limit: $25,560 a year if you claim retirement benefits early and stay under full retirement age all year. This limit does not apply to SSI.
  • SSDI work amounts: SSA sets the non-blind substantial gainful activity level at $1,770 a month and the trial work month amount at $1,270. SSI does not use a trial work period.
  • Social Security tax cap: $192,300 in earnings. This figure has no effect on SSI.

If you receive both SSI and SSDI, SSA counts your SSDI check as unearned income when it calculates your SSI payment.

What SSI Recipients Should Do Before the January 2027 Payment

  1. Multiply nothing and guess nothing. Wait for your personal notice from SSA, which shows your exact 2027 payment.
  2. Report wages, new benefits, and living changes by the 10th day of the month after they happen. SSA offers a mobile wage reporting app and online reporting through a my Social Security account.
  3. Check your bank and savings balances against the $2,000 or $3,000 limit before the end of each month.
  4. Ignore anyone who asks for a fee or bank details to "activate" your raise. The COLA is automatic, and SSA never charges for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SSI income limit for 2027?

SSI has no single income cutoff. SSA subtracts your countable income from the federal benefit rate, which is $1,029 a month for an individual and $1,544 for a couple. After the $20 general exclusion and the $65 earned income exclusion plus half of your remaining wages, whatever income is left reduces your check dollar for dollar. Your federal payment reaches zero only when countable income equals the full federal rate, and your state may add a supplement on top.

How much is the maximum SSI payment in 2027?

An eligible individual can receive up to $1,029 a month, and an eligible couple can receive up to $1,544 combined. The couple amount covers both spouses together, so each person does not get $1,544. Countable income lowers these maximums, and some states add their own supplement.

Did the SSI resource limit go up in 2027?

No. The resource limits stay at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple, because federal law sets them and the COLA does not change them. The higher payment rate and the frozen savings cap work separately, so you can receive a bigger check and still lose eligibility if your countable resources go over the limit. SSA generally excludes your home and one vehicle, so check how a specific asset counts before you move money.

Does SSI use the same work rules as SSDI?

No. SSI reduces your payment through income exclusions, and it has no trial work period. SSDI uses the substantial gainful activity level of $1,770 a month for non-blind recipients and a trial work month amount of $1,270. If you receive both, SSA counts your SSDI check as unearned income when it figures your SSI payment.

What is the 2027 student earned income exclusion?

A student under 22 who attends school regularly can exclude up to $2,500 of wages a month in 2027, with a yearly cap of $10,080. SSA applies this exclusion before the $20 and $65 exclusions, so it protects more of your wages from reducing your SSI. You use the monthly amount until you reach the yearly cap.

When does the higher SSI payment arrive?

SSA sends the January 2027 payment on December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a federal holiday. This is your regular January payment arriving a day early, not an extra deposit. The increase is automatic, so you do not need to apply or pay anyone to receive it, and your SSA notice will show your exact new amount.
