PEAK might seem like a relaxing mountain-climbing game at first, but that peaceful vibe can vanish fast—especially when the Scoutmaster shows up. This massive green skeleton doesn’t just chase you for fun. It’s tied to some of the game’s rarest achievements and cosmetics, making the encounter both scary and rewarding.
If you’re aiming for the Mentorship Badge or the Inverted Eyes cosmetic, you’ll need to find the Scoutmaster on purpose. Here’s a full breakdown of how to summon him, survive the chase, and make the most of the encounter—whether you’re playing solo or with friends.

Who Is the Scoutmaster?
The Scoutmaster is a tall, creepy skeleton with glowing green skin and long limbs. He only appears under certain conditions, and when he does, he’ll start chasing you immediately. There’s no way to fight back—he’s invincible and immune to all weapons.
You’ll also notice your screen turn grainy and hear a low hissing noise when he’s close. This serves as your only early warning to start running before he grabs you.
There’s also some backstory hidden in journal pages around the Shore biome that hint at the Scoutmaster’s past, adding a layer of mystery to his presence.
How to Trigger the Scoutmaster
There are two ways to make the Scoutmaster appear, depending on how you’re playing.
Multiplayer: Leave Your Friends Behind
If you’re playing with others, summoning the Scoutmaster is easy. Just climb far ahead of your teammates—especially up steep slopes. The game interprets this as you breaking the golden rule: “Never leave your friends behind.” Once the gap gets wide enough, the Scoutmaster spawns and starts hunting you down.
The mechanic doesn’t rely on time but rather the vertical distance between players. If you go too far up while others remain below, even briefly, the system flags it and spawns the Scoutmaster near you.
It’s a quick way to unlock the Mentorship Badge if you’re in a group. Just know that when he shows up, you’re the target.
One clever trick used by players: in co-op, intentionally trigger the Scoutmaster, then kite him in circles around a wide plateau while teammates continue climbing. It’s risky—but it can buy you time and turn a punishment into strategy.
Solo: Use the Scoutmaster’s Bugle
Playing solo? Then you’ll need to find a rare item called the Scoutmaster Bugle to summon him. It’s hard to come by, but you’ll have the best luck searching:
- Inside Ancient Luggage
- Near statue loot
- Around high-altitude cliffs
The Bugle also has a slightly increased spawn chance near statues with glowing eyes or near supply caches on snowy cliffs, though the rate is still low. You’ll often need multiple runs to locate one.
The Bugle doesn’t just summon the Scoutmaster—it also fills up your secondary stamina bar. That gives you a temporary boost to help you escape, but you’ll need to act fast. The chase lasts for about a minute. If you survive, he disappears.
Surviving this full minute without dying grants the Inverted Eyes cosmetic, a visual unlock that signifies you faced one of the toughest solo encounters in the game.
This is the only way solo players can unlock the Inverted Eyes cosmetic.
Why You’d Want to Find Him
The Scoutmaster isn’t just there to scare you. Surviving (or triggering) an encounter unlocks some cool rewards:
- Mentorship Badge – Earned by triggering the Scoutmaster (you don’t need to survive in multiplayer).
- Inverted Eyes Cosmetic – Rewarded if you survive a full chase after using the Bugle in solo play.
Most players try to avoid him—but if you’re hunting achievements or cosmetics, he’s a must-see.
Can You Defeat the Scoutmaster?
No. The Scoutmaster can’t be killed or even damaged. Tools like the blow dart, rope cannon, and piton don’t work on him at all. Even stun effects or blow darts have no impact. This reinforces the idea that the Scoutmaster is not an enemy but a mechanic—a consequence, not a boss fight.
Fighting is pointless—you’re better off running and focusing on survival.
How to Survive the Encounter
Getting away from the Scoutmaster is tough, but not impossible—especially if you’re prepared.
- Stick to flat areas: The Scoutmaster climbs faster than you. You’ll have better chances dodging him on flat ground.
- Keep your camera moving: Look around constantly so you don’t get surprised from behind.
- Run in loops or zig-zags: This helps confuse his pathfinding a bit and buys you time.
- Use stamina foods: If you’re solo, pack items that boost or refill stamina to help outlast the chase.
- Choose your bugle spot wisely: Don’t blow the bugle on a steep incline. Open spaces give you a better chance to survive the full minute.
- Slide when needed: You can also use slopes to slide quickly if you need to escape downhill—just avoid tight rock clusters where he might pin you.
If you can stay ahead of him for 60 seconds, he vanishes. If not—get ready for a trip off the nearest cliff.
The Scoutmaster is PEAK’s most intense and surprising encounter. Whether you summon him for the rewards or run into him by mistake, knowing how he works makes a big difference. He can’t be beaten, but he can be outsmarted—and that’s where the fun is.
With daily-changing maps and biomes in PEAK, the Scoutmaster adds unpredictability to an otherwise chill experience. Knowing how and when to trigger him is the difference between panic and purpose.
If you’re aiming for all cosmetics or just want to push your climbing skills to the edge, finding the Scoutmaster is a challenge worth taking.
