Silent Hill f Scarecrow Field Puzzle Solution Guide (Story, Hard & Fog)

Silent Hill f is full of puzzles that mix eerie atmosphere with unsettling mechanics, and the Scarecrow Field puzzle is one of its most memorable. Trapped in a fog-choked rice field outside Nishida Farm, Hinako must escape by solving a sequence of riddles tied to scarecrows that resemble her classmates. Pick the wrong one, and you’ll be forced into a fight. Pick correctly, and the scarecrow will point the way forward.

How the Scarecrow Field Puzzle Works

When Hinako first enters the field, you’ll find a Mysterious Note on a hay bale. It explains the rules: each scarecrow has a nail (or “thorn”) driven into it. Removing the nail from the right scarecrow reveals the path to the next group. If you choose wrong, the scarecrow animates and attacks.

Key points to keep in mind:

  • A clue scarecrow with a sack on its head always provides a riddle that hints at the correct choice.
  • The right scarecrow is always female, and usually shares traits with Hinako or Rinko.
  • Wrong choices can drain your weapon durability quickly, so it’s better to read the clues carefully.
  • There are five stages total. Clearing all of them flawlessly unlocks the Acupuncture Specialist achievement/trophy.

Story Difficulty Solutions

In Story mode, the riddles are direct but still tricky. Look for scarecrows that resemble Hinako’s appearance—short hair, sailor uniform, and subtle unique features.

  1. Riddle: “Who are you? Why do you always have to be different than everyone else? Freak.”
    • Solution: Pick the girl openly holding a knife.
  2. Riddle: “Who are you? Honestly. You’re helpless without me.”
    • Solution: Choose the girl with no weapon at all.
  3. Riddle: “Who are you? I’ll be your friend. Otherwise, you’d be so miserably alone.”
    • Solution: Look for the girl wearing a yellow floral brooch—she’s the only one without the common heart-shaped brooch.
  4. Riddle: “Who are you? Tell me, truly. You two aren’t anything more than friends, right? I’ve always been watching you when you weren’t looking, you know.”
    • Solution: Select the girl scarecrow staring directly at a boy, while another girl stands behind her watching.
  5. Riddle: “Who are you? Yes, you.”
    • Solution: The short-haired girl in the back, with a hairstyle most similar to Hinako’s.

Hard Difficulty Solutions

Hard mode rewrites the riddles with more bitterness, often framed from Rinko’s perspective. Here the correct scarecrow tends to resemble Rinko rather than Hinako.

  1. Riddle: “Can you even imagine how I feel? I’ll put on my polite smile for now.”
    • Solution: The only smiling girl.
  2. Riddle: “Can you even imagine how I feel? What it’s like to have been deceived by you for so long?”
    • Solution: The girl with a knife in her hand and another stuck in her back.
  3. Riddle: “Can you even imagine how I feel? He never once looked at me the way he looked at you. Not once.”
    • Solution: The girl forced to look at a boy who has his back turned.
  4. Riddle: “Can you even imagine how I feel? You’ve always been such an eyesore.”
    • Solution: The girl with her neck craned uncomfortably to the side, avoiding eye contact.
  5. Riddle: “Can you even imagine how I feel? You hurt me, and even hurt him, too. Do you know how it feels to force a smile when I’m staring at that disgusting face of yours?!”
    • Solution: The girl with her head down, smiling faintly despite the knife in her back.

Lost in the Fog Difficulty Solutions

The hardest version, Lost in the Fog, twists the riddles into dark funeral imagery. The correct scarecrows are harder to read, and sometimes the answer isn’t a standing scarecrow at all.

  1. Riddle: “It’s your funeral today. I think I’ll give you a standing ovation.”
    • Solution: The girl with pigtails, her head twisted nearly upside-down.
  2. Riddle: “It’s your funeral today. Good riddance. It feels as though I finally got this painful burden off my chest.”
    • Solution: The girl who dropped her knife to the ground at her feet.
  3. Riddle: “It’s your funeral today. You hurt him, and now you’re leaving him behind. I hope you suffer for what you’ve done.”
    • Solution: The girl facing away from a boy scarecrow lying on the ground with a knife in his chest.
  4. Riddle: “It’s your funeral today. You were such a thorn in my side. Always getting between me and him.”
    • Solution: Starting from the nearby girl, trace her line of sight to a boy on the opposite side. Pick the girl standing between them.
  5. Riddle: “It’s your funeral today. Goodbye, and don’t ever show your face again. Go do your own thing, just like you always have.”
    • Solution: Instead of picking from the group, follow the trail of dead scarecrows on the ground. They point you toward a lone standing girl, who holds the final nail.

Rewards for Solving the Puzzle
