How to Get Scizor in Pokémon Legends Z-A: Scyther Location, Metal Coat & Mega Scizor Guide

Scizor, the Bug- and Steel-type evolution of Scyther, makes a sharp return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. You won’t find it roaming wild in Lumiose City; instead, it’s one of those evolution-exclusive Pokémon that require a bit of preparation. Let’s look at exactly how to obtain your own Scizor and even unlock its Mega form later on.

Where to Find Scyther in Pokémon Legends Z-A

Your journey starts with catching a Scyther, found in Wild Zone 13, tucked away in the north-west section of Lumiose City.

Scyther appears most often at night, usually around level 38. This area is guarded by an Alpha Trevenant, so it helps to clear or avoid it before approaching the Scythers nearby. Stock up on Great Balls or Ultra Balls and aim to weaken Scyther without knocking it out; if it faints, it tends to disappear rather than respawn immediately.

Getting the Metal Coat

Scyther evolves only when it’s traded while holding a Metal Coat, so the next step is to earn that item. It doesn’t appear early—first you must complete Main Mission 35: Reaching Rank A. Once that milestone is done, Metal Coat becomes obtainable in several ways.

  • Side Mission 101 – “Steadfast as Steel”
    • Visit Bleu Street in the southwest of the city, just past Wild Zone 16, where a Rust Syndicate Grunt waits near an archway. Defeat their team—Excadrill, Steelix, Mawile, and Scizor—to earn your first Metal Coat.
  • Side Mission 114 – “A Feather from Skarmory”
    • Available only after finishing the main story, this side quest offers another Metal Coat as a reward.
  • Post-game purchase
    • If you’d rather buy one, head to Racine Construction near Wild Zone 17. Inside, the worker on the left side of the garage sells Metal Coats for 4,980 Pokédollars.

How to Evolve Scyther into Scizor in Pokémon Legends Z-A

Once Scyther is holding the Metal Coat, the classic trade evolution applies. Trade it to another player—either locally or online—and it will immediately evolve into Scizor during the transaction.

If you don’t have a friend nearby, you can still connect online using the Trade Code 0176-0176 through Link Play. Remember, a Nintendo Switch Online subscription (or its free trial) is required for online trading. After the evolution, simply trade Scizor back to keep it in your collection.

How to Get Mega Scizor in Pokémon Legends Z-A

Later in the story, you can push Scizor even further by unlocking its Mega form. To do so, purchase the Scizorite from the Stone Emporium on Vernal Avenue—just south of the Vernal Pokémon Center—for 50,000 Pokédollars.

Have Scizor hold the Scizorite, and it will be ready to Mega Evolve in battle whenever Mega Evolution becomes available to you.

Recommended Nature and Moveset

Scizor shines as a fast physical attacker with solid defense. The best Natures emphasize that strength:

NatureBenefit
AdamantRaises Attack, lowers Special Attack for maximum power.
JollyIncreases Speed, perfect for aggressive builds.

If your Scizor’s Nature doesn’t match, Mints can adjust it later.

Suggested moves for story play:

  • Iron Head – Reliable Steel-type strike with a flinch chance
  • Swords Dance – Great Attack boost for sweeping opponents
  • Lunge – Deals damage while lowering the enemy’s Attack
  • Bullet Punch – A quick-priority move that finishes low-HP targets

Is Scizor Worth Getting in Pokémon Legends Z-A?

It takes some work—clearing missions, earning the Metal Coat, and trading—but Scizor rewards that effort with one of the most balanced offensive profiles in the game. Its typing gives it resistance to many common attacks, and its Mega form turns it into a powerhouse capable of slicing through late-game opponents.

Whether you want a dependable story-mode partner or a sleek addition to your competitive lineup, Scizor stands out as a steel-clad success story in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
