Microsoft Word Asks for Product Key Even After Paying for Office? Fix It

If you have already paid for Microsoft Office (Microsoft 365) but Word refuses to open and asks for a product key, the issue is almost always activation or sign-in related, not a missing key.

Microsoft Word Asks for Product Key Even After Paying for Office? Fix It

Microsoft 365 subscriptions do not require a product key for normal use. They activate through your Microsoft account email. This guide shows exact fixes, in the correct order, to restore access to Word.

Why Word Asks for a Product Key Even After Payment

Word shows the product key prompt when:

  • Office is not signed in to the correct Microsoft account
  • Office installed as a trial or standalone version
  • Activation broke after a Windows or Office update
  • An old Office version is conflicting with the subscription

If your subscription is active, Word will open once it recognizes your account.

Fix 1: Sign In Inside Word (Most Common Solution)

  1. Open Word
  2. Click File
  3. Select Account
  4. Click Sign in
  5. Sign in using the email you used to buy Office
  6. Close Word completely
  7. Reopen Word

If activation succeeds, the product key message disappears immediately.

Fix 2: Confirm Your Microsoft 365 Subscription Is Active

  1. Open a browser
  2. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account
  4. Check that Microsoft 365 shows:
    • Status: Active
    • Correct renewal date

If the subscription is active here, you do not need a product key.

Fix 3: Re-Activate Office from Office.com

Installing Office again from the official page forces license sync.

  1. Visit https://www.office.com
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account
  3. Click Install Office
  4. Download and install
  5. Restart your computer
  6. Open Word

This step resolves most activation loop issues.

Fix 4: Remove Old Office Versions (If It Still Fails)

Old Office installs can block activation.

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter
  3. Uninstall all Office / Microsoft 365 versions
  4. Restart your PC
  5. Go to office.com
  6. Sign in and reinstall Office

This clears license conflicts completely.

What NOT to Do

  • Do not buy a product key
  • Do not activate Office using third-party tools
  • Do not sign in with a different email than the one used for purchase

Subscriptions activate only through the correct account.

Microsoft 365 relies entirely on account-based licensing. If Word cannot detect your account, it assumes you are using a trial or retail copy and requests a key.

Once Word reconnects to your account, the issue disappears permanently.
