Google Search looks and works very differently in 2026 than it did just a year ago. At Google I/O 2026, Google officially declared that Google Search is now AI Search, and the centerpiece of that shift is Google AI Mode. If you have seen a new tab appearing next to Images, News, and Shopping in your search results, that is AI Mode. This guide explains exactly what it is, how to access it, and how to get the most out of it.

What Is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is an AI-powered search experience built directly into Google Search. Instead of returning a list of blue links, it generates a comprehensive, conversational response to your query, complete with follow-up prompts, visual cards, and links to explore further.
At Google I/O 2026, Google upgraded AI Mode to run on Gemini 3.5 Flash, its most advanced AI model to date. Gemini 3.5 Flash is designed with a reasoning-first approach, which means it can handle complex, multi-part questions and return clear, structured answers in seconds.
AI Mode has already crossed 1 billion monthly active users globally, and query volume has more than doubled every quarter since launch. Google also reports that overall Search queries are at an all-time high, with the average AI Mode search running three times longer than a traditional search query.
What Changed in Google Search at Google I/O 2026
Google announced the biggest upgrade to its Search box in 25 years at Google I/O 2026. The changes rolled out on May 19, 2026, across all countries and languages where AI Mode is available.
Here is what changed:
- The Search box itself now uses AI-powered suggestions that go far beyond autocomplete. It anticipates your intent and helps you frame your question more precisely before you even submit it.
- Custom AI pages replace the traditional list of links. When you submit a query, AI Mode builds a response page tailored to your question, with an AI-generated summary, supporting links, and follow-up options.
- Multi-modal input lets you search using text, images, files, videos, and even open Chrome tabs as context for your query.
- Conversational follow-ups work across both AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can ask a follow-up question directly from an AI Overview and flow straight into a back-and-forth conversation, with your context preserved throughout the session.
- AI agents (available for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers starting this summer) can run in the background around the clock, monitoring news, real estate listings, sports scores, and shopping data and notifying you when something relevant comes up.
How to Access Google AI Mode on Desktop
Accessing AI Mode on desktop takes under a minute.
- Open your browser and go to google.com.
- Make sure you are signed in to your Google Account. Your profile avatar should appear in the top-right corner.
- Type any query into the search bar and press Enter.
- Look for the AI Mode tab at the top of the results page, sitting alongside All, Images, News, and Shopping.
- Click the AI Mode tab to switch to the AI-powered interface.
On Chrome desktop, Google has also added a side-by-side experience. When you click a link inside AI Mode, the page opens next to your AI conversation so you do not need to switch tabs to read the source.
How to Access Google AI Mode on Mobile (Android and iOS)
The steps are slightly different on mobile, but equally straightforward.
- Update the Google app on your Android or iOS device to the latest version.
- Open the Google app and type or speak a search query.
- Tap the AI Mode tab that appears at the top of your results, next to All, Images, and other filters.
- To switch back to standard results at any time, tap All at the top of the screen.
For voice and camera searches, tap the Live icon under the search bar inside the Google app. This opens Search Live, which lets you have a real-time, back-and-forth voice or camera-based conversation with AI Mode. Search Live is now available in over 200 countries.
How to Use Google AI Mode Effectively
Once you are inside AI Mode, here is how to take full advantage of it.
Ask longer, more specific questions: AI Mode uses a technique called query fan-out, which breaks your question into subtopics and searches multiple sources simultaneously. Vague one-word queries return shallow results. A question like “what are the best budget laptops under $600 for students in 2026” gives AI Mode enough context to return a genuinely useful answer.
Use follow-up questions: After the first response, a set of suggested follow-ups appears below. You can tap one or type your own. Your context stays active throughout the conversation, so you do not need to repeat background information.
Search with images and files: Tap the attachment icon in the search bar to upload an image, document, or video. You can also share an open Chrome tab as input. This is useful for questions like identifying a product from a photo or asking AI Mode to summarize a page you are already reading.
Use voice input: Tap the microphone icon in the AI Mode search bar to ask a question aloud. For a full hands-free experience, switch to Search Live for a continuous spoken conversation.
Connect personal context: Through Personal Intelligence, you can grant AI Mode access to your Gmail and Google Photos so it can factor in your personal context when answering relevant questions. This feature is now free for all users across nearly 200 countries in 98 languages. Google Calendar integration is coming soon.
How to Switch Between AI Mode and Classic Search
AI Mode and the standard search results tab are both available at all times. You do not lose access to classic blue-link results.
- On desktop, click the All tab at the top of the results page to return to traditional search results.
- On mobile, tap All at the top of the screen to go back and forth between AI Mode and standard results.
If you prefer to avoid AI Overviews on a specific search, click the Web tab that appears beneath the search bar after your results load. This strips out AI-generated summaries and shows only traditional links. Alternatively, you can append &udm=14 to any Google search URL in your browser address bar to force the Web tab view directly.
Is Google AI Mode Available in Your Country?
As of Google I/O 2026, the new intelligent Search box and the seamless AI Mode experience are live across all countries and languages where AI Mode is available. Search Live, the voice and camera feature, covers over 200 countries. Personal Intelligence has expanded to nearly 200 countries across 98 languages.
If AI Mode does not appear in your search results yet, make sure your Google app is updated to the latest version. Google rolls out new features in stages, so it may take a few days to appear on your account.
