How to Fix GeForce Experience Driver Download Failed Error on Windows

The GeForce Experience driver download failed error stops you from downloading or installing the latest NVIDIA drivers through the app. This happens due to missing admin rights, antivirus interference, a corrupted GeForce Experience installation, or a blocked firewall rule preventing the app from reaching NVIDIA servers.

This guide covers six fixes that resolve the error on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What Causes the GeForce Experience Driver Download Failed Error

• GeForce Experience lacks administrator permissions
• Antivirus or Windows Firewall blocks the download
• A background app interferes with the installation process
• The GeForce Experience installation itself is corrupted
• The automatic driver download setting is turned off
• Windows Update runs in the background during installation

Fix 1: Run GeForce Experience as Administrator

The most common cause is a permission issue. Running GeForce Experience with administrator rights fixes it in many cases.

1. Close GeForce Experience completely. Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager to make sure no background process for it is running.
2. Press Win, type GeForce Experience, and right-click the result.
3. Select Run as administrator.
4. Click Yes on the User Account Control prompt.
5. Head to the Drivers tab and try downloading the update again.

If the download completes, set GeForce Experience to always run as administrator:

1. Right-click the GeForce Experience shortcut on your desktop and select Properties.
2. Go to the Compatibility tab.
3. Check Run this program as an administrator.
4. Click Apply, then OK.

Fix 2: Enable the Automatic Driver Download Setting

GeForce Experience disables automatic driver downloads by default. Turning this on often triggers a fresh download attempt and resolves stuck or failed downloads.

1. Open GeForce Experience and click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner.
2. Click the General tab in the left sidebar.
3. Scroll down to the Downloads section.
4. Check the box next to Automatically download driver updates and let me choose when to install.
5. Restart GeForce Experience.

After restarting, the app should detect and queue the latest driver automatically.

Fix 3: Add GeForce Experience to Windows Firewall Exceptions

Windows Firewall can silently block GeForce Experience from connecting to NVIDIA servers, causing every download attempt to fail.

1. Press Win + R, type control firewall.cpl, and press Enter.
2. Click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall in the left panel.

8. Click OK and retry the driver download.

If you use a third-party antivirus such as Bitdefender, Kaspersky, or Avast, temporarily disable real-time protection and test the download. If it succeeds, add GeForce Experience as a permanent exception in your antivirus settings.

Fix 4: Perform a Clean Boot and Retry the Download

A third-party startup app or service can interfere with the GeForce Experience download. Close GPU monitoring and tuning utilities like MSI Afterburner, Corsair iCUE, or EVGA Precision X1 before trying again. If closing those apps does not help, use Clean Boot to isolate the conflict.

1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
2. Go to the Services tab. Check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
3. Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
4. Disable every startup item in Task Manager, then close it.
5. Click OK in System Configuration and restart your PC.
6. After the restart, open GeForce Experience and try the driver download.

If the download succeeds in Clean Boot, re-enable startup apps and services in small batches to find the conflicting program. Re-enable services in Task Manager and restart normally after you identify the cause.

Fix 5: Reinstall GeForce Experience

A corrupted GeForce Experience installation causes persistent download failures that no other fix resolves. Reinstalling the app gives you a clean slate.

1. Press Win + I to open Windows Settings.
2. Go to Apps and then Installed apps.
3. Search for GeForce Experience in the search bar.
4. Click the three-dot menu next to it and select Uninstall. Confirm when prompted.
5. After uninstallation, visit nvidia.com and click Download Now.
6. Run the installer and complete the setup. Sign in to your NVIDIA account when prompted.
7. Go to the Drivers tab and attempt the download.

Fix 6: Download and Install the NVIDIA Driver Manually

If GeForce Experience keeps failing, skip the app entirely and download the driver directly from NVIDIA. This method always works as long as you select the correct options for your GPU.

1. Visit the NVIDIA driver download page: https://www.nvidia.com/drivers/
2. Select your Product Type, Product Series, and Product (your GPU model).
3. Choose your Operating System and the driver type. For gaming, select Game Ready Driver. For creative work, select Studio Driver.
4. Click Search, then Download, and confirm to start the download.
5. Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
6. Accept the license and click Agree and Continue.
7. Choose Custom (Advanced) install.
8. Check Perform a clean installation to wipe existing driver files before installing the new ones.
9. Select the components you want and click Next.
10. Wait for the installation to finish and click Close.
11. Restart your PC.

A clean installation removes old driver files that can cause conflicts, so always use this option when troubleshooting failed driver updates.

Bonus: Switch to the NVIDIA App

NVIDIA no longer actively develops GeForce Experience. The newer NVIDIA App replaces it with a cleaner interface, does not require an NVIDIA account for basic features, and handles driver updates more reliably.

1. Uninstall GeForce Experience using the steps in Fix 5.
2. Download the NVIDIA App from nvidia.com.
3. Install and open the app. Go to the Drivers section to download and install the latest driver.
