To activate Skulls in Halo: Campaign Evolved, go to the main menu, select Campaign, then choose New Game instead of Continue (which just resumes your existing save without touching Skulls). Pick a difficulty, select an unlocked mission and rally point, then enable your collected Skulls on the Select Skulls screen and hit Apply & Start.

How to Activate Skulls in Campaign Evolved
Skulls only activate through a fresh campaign session, not through Continue or the pause menu.
Follow this menu path to turn them on.
- Open the main menu and select Campaign.
- Choose New Game instead of Continue.
- Pick a difficulty level.
- Select any mission and rally point (checkpoint) you have already unlocked.
- On the Select Skulls screen, toggle every Skull you want active.
- Select Apply & Start to load the mission with those modifiers running.
Starting a New Game overrides your current solo campaign save, but it does not delete your unlocked missions or rally points. You can still jump back into any section you have already reached, just with a fresh session and your chosen Skulls applied.
How to Turn Off or Change Active Skulls
You cannot toggle Skulls once a mission is already running.
There is no in-mission or pause menu option to disable them mid-play. To remove or swap out active Skulls, return to the main menu, select Campaign, then New Game again. Pick your difficulty, mission, and rally point as before, then deselect the Skulls you no longer want on the Select Skulls screen before pressing Apply & Start. This same process applies whether you want to turn off one Skull or replace your entire combination.
How Many Skulls Are There in Halo Campaign Evolved?
Once you know how to turn Skulls on and off, the next question is how many you’re actually chasing. The full Skull count in Campaign Evolved sits at 42.
Most of that total comes from the campaign itself: 39 Skulls sit hidden across the 13 missions, broken down evenly at three per level. The other three don’t come from exploration at all. They open up through Campaign Remix once you’ve tracked down three standard Skulls anywhere in the game. As for what’s actually on the list, it’s a blend of names longtime players will recognize (Bandana, Iron, Mythic, Grunt Birthday Party, Acrophobia) sitting alongside 16 new modifiers built specifically for this version of the campaign, several of which are covered below.
New Skulls Added in Campaign Evolved
Several Skulls in this release did not appear in the original Combat Evolved.

Perspective switches the camera to a third-person view for the entire mission. Give & Take drains your shields whenever you fire a weapon, but dealing damage restores them. Endurance Spec makes UNSC vehicles impossible to destroy, which turns vehicle-heavy sections much safer. Efficient, Foreign, and They Come Back round out the new additions, each altering combat encounters or resource management in its own way.
What Do Campaign Remix Skulls Do?
Collecting three standard Skulls unlocks Campaign Remix and its three exclusive modifiers.
Adaptation randomizes which enemy types appear in a mission. Reload randomizes weapon placements and spawns. Armistice makes normally hostile enemy factions fight alongside each other instead of against the player. These three work differently from the standard Skulls since they change encounter variety rather than simply raising or lowering difficulty.
Best Skull Combinations to Try
Turning on every Skull you own at the same time usually backfires, since it gets hard to tell which one is actually causing what you’re seeing on screen. Pairing two or three related Skulls gives a clearer, more controlled result.
If your goal is a smoother run through a mission you’ve already beaten, pair Bandana with Stowed Reload. The unlimited ammo and grenades from Bandana cover your firepower, and Stowed Reload handles the rest by refilling holstered weapons on its own. Want to see an old mission from a fresh angle instead? Perspective’s third-person camera combined with the flight Acrophobia unlocks through double jumping changes how familiar rooms and firefights feel.
On the harder end, stack Mythic, Thunderstorm, and Angry together: Mythic adds extra enemy health, Thunderstorm bumps their rank up, and Angry gets them firing faster, all in the same fight. Campaign Remix has its own combo too: running Adaptation, Reload, and Armistice together swaps out enemy types, weapon spawns, and faction alliances at once, which keeps even a well known mission from playing out the same way twice.
A handful of Skulls are strong enough to test alone first. Floor Is Lava punishes you just for standing still, Give & Take costs you shields with every shot you fire, and Iron sends you back to the start of the level the moment you die in solo play. Any one of these can reshape an entire mission without needing another modifier stacked on top.
Do Skulls Disable Achievements or Trophies?
No, running Skulls won’t cost you achievements or trophies.
Feel free to load up whatever combination of modifiers sounds fun. Progression rewards keep unlocking the same way they would on a clean playthrough. The one catch involves collectible-specific achievements, which don’t care what Skulls you’ve turned on. Those only unlock once you’ve actually located every hidden Skull and every Terminal yourself.
