The Mist is one of the most unsettling and confusing areas in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Unlike other biomes, it doesn’t have a map, and its randomized rooms can trap you in a seemingly endless loop. - From Sinner’s Road: Travel northeast above Halfway Home. In the vertical chamber with a bench, climb up, move left, and break the destructible wall to access the entrance.
- From Bilewater: Head to the far left side of the biome, near the Bellway. This route loops back from the Underworks if you’ve already explored the Citadel.
Required Abilities:
- Cling Grip (wall jump) – obtained from Sister Splinter in Shellwood.
- Needolin – gained by defeating the Widow in Bellhart.
Without these, you won’t be able to enter or progress through The Mist.
The Core Challenge of The Mist
Unlike standard regions, The Mist is built from randomized chambers with multiple exits. If you take the wrong door or fall into a pit, you’ll be transported back to the very beginning. Since there’s no map, navigation depends on recognizing environmental clues.
The key to progressing lies in the glowing white butterflies (sometimes called moths or flies).
- Each chamber has a cluster of butterflies.
- Play your Needolin near them for a few seconds.
- They will flutter toward the correct exit.
- Follow them carefully to advance.
You’ll need to repeat this across several rooms:
- Three rooms to reach the halfway lamppost.
- Three more rooms to exit and arrive at the Exhaust Organ.
Hazards and Enemies
The Mist isn’t just a navigation puzzle. It tests your platforming and combat skills:
Wraiths
- These spectral enemies scream before lunging.
- If they grab you, they deal two Masks of damage and drain your Silk.
- Best strategy: wait for the scream, jump, and strike downward to pogo. Alternatively, use ranged Tools like Thread Storm or Threefold Pin to keep them at bay.
- Tip: Engage one Wraith at a time to avoid being overwhelmed.
Traps
- Spikes – spring from floors or drop from ceilings with little warning.
- Bear traps – hidden on the ground, easily missed in the fog.
- Falling platforms and cages – collapse shortly after you step on them.
- Bottomless pits – falling through resets your entire run.
Patience and observation are essential; rushing usually means restarting.
Platforming Strategy
The Mist’s layout can trick you into thinking paths are blocked. Sometimes butterflies will guide you toward spikes or ledges that look inaccessible. Trust their direction—often a hidden passage or narrow gap lies just beyond what you see.

- Move slowly and check the ground before dropping down.
- Use short hops to test platforms.
- Clear Wraiths before attempting trickier jumps.
The Exhaust Organ and Beyond
Escaping The Mist brings you to the Exhaust Organ, a towering structure that explains the fog’s origin. Here, you’ll face:
- Twisting pathways filled with steam vents and spike-lined shafts.
- A rest bench that serves as a much-needed checkpoint.
- The Phantom boss fight—a fast, agile opponent who vanishes into the mist and counters with deadly precision.
Defeating the Phantom disperses The Mist entirely, connecting Sinner’s Road and Bilewater directly. You’ll also unlock the Cross Stitch skill, giving you your own parry stance for future battles.
