Rockstar Fired GTA 6 Developers for Leaks, Not Union Activity, Studio Says

As excitement builds for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games has found itself at the center of controversy after firing more than 30 developers. What began as accusations of union busting has now evolved into a heated dispute over whether the dismissals were tied to leaked company secrets.

Last week, Rockstar dismissed a group of developers working on GTA 6, calling their behavior “gross misconduct.” The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), which had been in contact with several of the fired employees, quickly claimed that the move was a clear attempt at union busting. According to the union, the workers were part of a private Discord group discussing labor rights and workplace conditions—not internal company information.

Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, initially gave no detailed explanation. But as the story gained international attention, the studio clarified that the employees were allegedly sharing confidential information in a public forum, which violated internal policies.

Rockstar’s Official Statement

In a statement to Bloomberg, Rockstar said:

“We took action against a small number of individuals who were found to be distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, a violation of our company policies. This was in no way related to people’s right to join a union or engage in union activities.”

The developer insists the decision was purely disciplinary and unrelated to unionization efforts. However, the lack of clarity over what was actually leaked has fueled skepticism among fans and labor advocates alike.

Protests Erupt Over Rockstar’s Firings

The IWGB strongly refuted Rockstar’s justification, stating that the dismissed workers were not leaking any production details or trade secrets. Instead, the union claims they were exercising their rights to organize for better working conditions and fair pay.

Alex Marshall, president of the IWGB, said management was more concerned about suppressing collective action than protecting GTA 6’s confidentiality. He accused the company of “prioritizing union busting by targeting the very people who make the game.”

Following the dismissals, protests were organized outside Rockstar North’s offices in Scotland, with additional demonstrations planned in early November.

A Controversy Amid GTA 6’s Final Stretch

The firings couldn’t have come at a more delicate time for Rockstar. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release in May 2026, and development has already faced years of leaks, including a massive 2022 breach that revealed early footage of the game. The company has since tightened its internal security and imposed stricter information-sharing policies.

That context gives Rockstar’s claims some weight—leaks have historically disrupted its projects—but it also raises concerns about transparency. The studio’s silence on what “confidential information” was supposedly shared leaves the situation open to interpretation.

While Rockstar says it’s enforcing standard confidentiality policies, critics argue the incident highlights a broader issue within the gaming industry: the tension between creative labor and corporate control. Developers across major studios have been advocating for collective bargaining rights, citing burnout, crunch culture, and lack of fair representation.

This isn’t the first time Rockstar’s work culture has faced scrutiny. The studio has previously been criticized for excessive overtime and lack of work-life balance during major game launches, including Red Dead Redemption 2.

Could GTA 6 Face Another Delay?

So far, there’s no indication that the incident will delay GTA 6’s release, but public pressure could push Rockstar to address its internal culture more openly. Fans are hoping the studio won’t let controversy overshadow one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history.

Given Rockstar’s long-standing policy of secrecy, the truth behind the firings may never be fully revealed. But the timing, just months ahead of a major milestone in GTA 6’s development, ensures that the debate around union rights and creative freedom at the company will continue well into 2026.
