The Beast Within is one of the first major nighttime story missions in Dying Light: The Beast. Unlocked after completing Life After Life and defeating the Defect Chimera, this quest throws you into the dark streets of Old Town to hunt a terrifying new Volatile. It’s a tense mix of stealth, parkour, and survival that teaches you how to handle nighttime danger while advancing the main story.

How to Begin The Beast Within Quest
Head to the Town Hall and find Jacob on the second floor. After a brief conversation, he explains the Beast’s rampage and warns that it may strike again. Sheriff also contacts you over the radio, mentioning that she saw the creature fleeing across the rooftops.

From here, you’re locked into nighttime gameplay, so keep your flashlight ready but use it sparingly — it helps visibility but also attracts unwanted attention.
Tracking the Beast’s Trail
Exit through the top-floor window of the Town Hall. Use Survivor Sense to reveal glowing footprints across the rooftops. Follow the tracks southeast, jumping between buildings and cables, until a massive explosion shakes the city. Your new objective is to investigate.
Tip: If a Volatile spots you during this section, retreat to the Town Hall’s UV lights for safety.
Investigating the Explosion Site
The blast occurred under a large bridge near a military vehicle. The area is crawling with Biters and possibly a Volatile patrol. Clear only what you must, then check the wreckage and bodies of Baron’s men.

Inside a nearby truck, loot supplies like ammo, fuel, and even an SMG, which will come in handy later. After a short cutscene, you’ll be directed toward the church, where survivors are calling for help.
Entering the Church
Make your way north to Old Town’s church. Even if chased by Volatiles, the UV lamps around the church gate offer a safe zone. Unfortunately, the front doors are locked.
Take the stairs down to the basement entrance. Crawl through a hole in the wall to reach a chamber full of dormant Sleepers. Stay crouched, keep your light off, and hug the right-hand side to sneak past without waking them. At the far end, climb up and remove a wooden plank to access the main hall.
A cutscene shows your first direct glimpse of the Beast before it flees, leaving you to deal with the chaos below.
Climbing the Church Tower
Now comes one of the quest’s most challenging sections: scaling the church interior.
- Start at the scaffolding near the altar and climb onto the ledges.
- Shimmy along the statue, then jump across gaps to platforms.
- Drop a folding ladder on the way — a safety shortcut in case you fall.
- Use chandeliers and a rope swing to reach the opposite balcony.
- Keep climbing ledges and wooden platforms until you emerge on the roof.
Along the way, you’ll encounter infected. You can fight them for XP or focus on climbing. Either way, use kicks to knock enemies off ledges and reduce pressure.
Chasing to the Train Tunnel
From the church roof, follow the Beast’s tracks toward the train tunnels on the city’s edge. Use ziplines to speed across rooftops, but beware of rebel enemies patrolling below.

Inside the tunnel, follow yellow glowsticks marking the path. You’ll face scattered infected and eventually a tougher brute-type enemy. Use heavy weapons or the environmental Pitchfork to deal big damage quickly. Loot nearby rooms for valuable supplies, including survivor caches and medical kits.
Encounter with the Beast
Push deeper into the tunnels until you find a barricaded area with soldiers. A cutscene reveals the Beast, but before you can fight, chaos erupts — explosions collapse parts of the tunnel and the creature slips away.
Escaping the Tunnels
This final section is a full chase sequence. A swarm of infected, along with Volatiles, floods the tunnels. Fighting here means certain death. Instead:
- Run nonstop toward the exit.
- Use bars, ropes, and planks to cross obstacles quickly.
- Don’t waste time on loot or combat.
If you keep your momentum, you’ll burst back into daylight and complete the quest.

Quick Tips for The Beast Within Quest
- Use Survivor Sense often to spot tracks and hidden loot.
- Stay on rooftops whenever possible — it keeps you out of Volatile patrol zones.
- Don’t panic during stealth sections; Sleepers in the basement won’t wake unless you make noise.
- Parkour precision is key in the church climb. Take it slow and look carefully for climbable ledges.
- Save combat energy for the brute fight in the tunnels — most other fights can be avoided.
- During the escape, prioritize survival. Speed and awareness matter more than loot or kills.
The Beast Within isn’t just a main quest — it’s a survival trial by fire. It forces you to balance stealth, parkour, and sheer speed while giving your first taste of Volatiles in full pursuit.
