The Planetologist skill path is your key to mastering Arrakis, but unlike other progressions, you can’t choose it at the beginning. Unlocking the full Planetologist skills requires completing a detailed, multi-part questline. This guide explains every step, from finding the trainer to acquiring advanced abilities that make you the ultimate explorer and resource specialist.

What Is the Planetologist Skill Path?

The Planetologist is a specialized progression that focuses on exploration, environmental mastery, and efficient resource gathering. It’s not accessible at character creation and must be unlocked via a side quest initiated in South Hagga Basin. Once acquired, Planetologist offers powerful passive and active abilities that improve survival, boost mining yields, and optimize vehicle usage in the harsh conditions of Arrakis.

While Planetologist provides unique tools and survival advantages, it has very limited offensive or defensive combat utility. This path is best suited for players focused on crafting, harvesting, and terrain mastery—not direct confrontation.

It is labeled “easy to learn” in-game, making it a great choice for players focused on PvE, gathering, and exploration.

Skill Focus and Playstyle Summary

Planetologist skills span across the following gameplay systems:

  • Exploration: Traversal, climbing, scanning, and terrain mastery.
  • Vehicle: Fuel efficiency, mining with vehicles, durability management.
  • Energy: Power pack optimization, scanner range, and spice bed analysis.
  • Resource Gathering: Cutteray efficiency, compactor results, spice and dew harvesting.

The playstyle favors PvE, long-distance survival, and resource economy over combat. This makes Planetologist ideal for crafting- and exploration-focused players who value efficiency over aggression.

How to Unlock Planetologist Skills in Dune Awakening

The journey begins in Hagga Basin South, where you must locate an NPC named Derek Chinara, stationed above Imperial Testing Station No. 2. Interact with him to start the quest Minimic Film Recovery. You’ll need to explore Testing Station 02 and retrieve a hidden item to unlock Planetologist skills in Dune Awakening.

You can reach Derek Chinara directly at Imperial Station No. 2, or accept a contract titled Assistance Needed from Griffin’s Reach. Both paths begin the same questline.

Optional: “Assistance Needed” Contract

Before visiting Derek, players may receive the Assistance Needed contract from Griffin’s Reach. Completing it also directs you to Derek’s camp and grants an additional 150 XP.
