The Borderlands series has always thrived on over-the-top action, wild loot, and pop-culture nods. Borderlands 4 carries on that tradition, and few side missions highlight it better than the Wayward Gun quest. This quirky adventure is more than just another firefight—it’s a playful homage to Pokémon, complete with “catching” enemies and facing off against a knockoff villain duo.

How to Unlock the Quest
Before you can dive in, you’ll need to complete the main mission “A Lot to Process.” Once that’s wrapped up, head to Cuspid Climb in the Terminus Range region.
There you’ll find a small settlement called Dusk’s Advent, where an NPC named Emile will call out with the unmistakable line: “I choose you, to save our A—”. Speak with him, and the Wayward Gun side mission begins.
Step 1: Survive the Ambush
The moment you accept the quest, sentient Tediore gun-turrets storm the area. Take them out quickly to stabilize Dusk’s Advent.
Once the attack is over, Emile directs you to a quartermaster named Bash (a not-so-subtle nod to Ash from Pokémon), who holds the key to capturing these rogue weapons.
Step 2: Breaking Into the Ammo Storage
Bash points you toward a locked Ammo Shed, which holds special containers needed for the mission. To get inside, you’ll need to disable two generators powering its security barriers:
- Generator One – Located on the roof of the Ammo Shed. Shoot it down from the ground.
- Generator Two – Grapple up the building across from the shed to find and destroy the second unit.
With the barriers down, zipline over and collect the Catch-tainers—essentially this quest’s version of Poké Balls.
Step 3: Capturing the Offsprings
Head to the designated area and use the Catch-tainers to trap Tediore Offsprings, the walking turrets causing chaos. You’ll need to capture five to advance, though catching an optional six extra will net you a better reward at the end.
To use a Catch-tainer, simply throw it at a turret and watch it seal the enemy inside.
Step 4: The Bomb Squad Battle
As soon as you finish trapping turrets, the self-styled Bomb Squad bursts onto the scene. The duo, Jake and Josey, descend with a theatrical monologue—an obvious parody of Team Rocket.
Defeat them to clear the path forward. Once they’re down, your mission marker points to the next stage: Rock Bottom.
Step 5: Rock Bottom and the Mini-Boss Pew
At Rock Bottom in Cloudbank, waves of turrets block your progress. Fight through until the quest shifts to confronting Pew, a mini-boss that spawns at the Grey Havenage Safehouse. Take him down along with his army to move forward.
Step 6: Facing PEWPEW
The true boss, PEWPEW, makes his appearance next. You’ll get a transmission leading you toward the GIM, a structure perched above the safehouse. To reach it:
- Return to the Grey Havenage Safehouse.
- Use the container lift to climb higher.
- Double-jump and hover across the gap into the GIM.
Inside, PEWPEW commands a horde of walking turrets. Clear the adds first, then focus your fire on the boss. If PEWPEW freezes mid-fight—a known bug—use a melee strike to reset him. Reloading your save also works.
Step 7: Resetting the Core
Once PEWPEW is defeated, he requests that you wipe his memory. Hack into the nearby terminal to reboot the GIM core, ending his reign of chaos and wrapping up the side quest.
Wayward Gun Quest Rewards
Finishing the Wayward Gun quest earns you a satisfying mix of loot and cosmetics:
- Experience, Cash, and Eridium
- Assault Rifle (Green to Purple rarity)
- “Loyal Customer” Vault Hunter style
- Echo-4 Paintjob: Loyal Customer
Capturing the extra Tediore Offsprings earlier ensures a higher-tier weapon reward, making the optional step worth the effort.
