UIDAI to develop Touchless Biometric Authentication System for Aadhar in collaboration with IIT-Bombay

UIDAI and IIT-Bombay have signed a Memorandum of understanding to develop a Touchless biometric Authentication system for Aadhar biometric, making it easier for people to use it anytime and anywhere. The system will use an intelligent combination of signal/image processing and machine learning/deep learning with a common mobile phone available to most citizens.

This system will allow Aadhaar users to authenticate their fingerprints from home using their mobile phones, It just similar to how they can authenticate their faces from a smartphone (video KYC verification). The system will be an addition to the existing facilities available in the Aadhaar ecosystem.

The research and development efforts for this system will be led by NCETIS, National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security; it a joint initiative by IIT Bombay and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Uses from Touchless Biometric Authentication System

  • It helps people avoid touching an actual device in authentication centers.
  • It does not require any additional hardware apart to use, except a smartphone with a decent camera
  • It can improve the authentication success rate, as it can capture multiple fingerprints at one go and use advanced algorithms for matching.
  • This will enhance the authentication success rate and user experience.
  • Faster access: Touchless biometric authentication can provide quick and convenient verification without requiring physical contact with a device or a scanner.
  • This system reduces the cost of hardware and maintenance in authentication centers.
