Oppo and Sony announce partnership on new dual-layer stacked image sensors

Oppo, one of the leading smartphone makers in the world, has announced a new strategic partnership with Sony, the global leader in image sensors, to bring the latest innovation in mobile photography to its future flagship devices. The partnership will leverage Sony’s new LYTIA brand of image sensors, which use a dual-layer stacked CMOS sensor design that separates the transistors and photodiode layers, allowing for larger diodes, more light capture and better low-light performance.

LYTIA is a new product brand for the image sensors that Sony Semiconductor Solutions makes for mobile devices. According to Sony, LYTIA sensors offer “unprecedented image quality and performance” by combining “the industry’s highest pixel count, sensitivity and dynamic range with advanced signal processing technology”.

LYTIA sensors also enable new features such as real-time HDR video recording, 3D depth sensing and ultra-fast autofocus.

Oppo and Sony have been collaborating on mobile imaging for years, and have jointly developed several custom sensors for Oppo’s smartphones, such as the IMX766 used in the Oppo Find X3 Pro and the Reno6 series. The new partnership will take this collaboration to the next level, as Oppo promises to “unlock the next era of computational photography” with the dual-layer stacked Sony sensors.

Oppo did not reveal when we can expect to see the first device with the new LYTIA sensor but said that it will be “coming soon”. Oppo also said that it will continue to work with Sony to explore new possibilities in mobile imaging and deliver “groundbreaking camera experiences” to its users.
