Angel Combs are some of the most important structures you will encounter in Subnautica 2. These massive, tree-like organic organisms permanently alter your DNA when you interact with them, granting Adaptations that remove core biological weaknesses your Pioneer starts with. Without them, you cannot eat local fish, survive high temperatures, or read alien technology.

Subnautica 2 currently has four known Adaptations tied to Angel Comb interactions, with two more confirmed but not yet accessible in Early Access. This guide covers every Angel Comb location, the exact coordinates, the requirements to unlock each one, and what each Adaptation actually does.
What Are Angel Combs?
Angel Combs are giant, bioluminescent plant-like organisms scattered across the regions and biomes of Proteus. They resemble large purple jellyfish anchored to the seabed, and each one houses a glowing pink sac at its center. Interacting with that sac triggers a DNA alteration that permanently upgrades your Pioneer’s biology.
Some Angel Combs are free to interact with immediately. Others are sealed by a viral infection and require specific tools to cleanse before they open up. In Creative Mode, the game hands you all available Adaptations from the start. In Survival Mode, you earn each one.
The prologue also contains one Angel Comb that grants you Pressure Tolerance before you ever hit the open ocean. That one is unmissable and covered separately below.
All Subnautica 2 Angel Comb Locations
Angel Comb 1: Pressure Tolerance (Tutorial, Sampling Pavilion)
- Location: Sampling Pavilion, inside the starting habitat
- Biome: Tutorial sequence (pre-crash)
- Requirement: None
The first Adaptation is the only freebie in the entire game. During the prologue, before you escape via the Lifepod, the game forces you to interact with an Angel Comb inside the Sampling Pavilion. This grants you Pressure Tolerance.
Pressure Tolerance allows your Pioneer to breathe pressurized air. Without it, your oxygen meter drains even when you are standing in dry, unsubmerged rooms. You cannot miss this one. The game does not let you skip it.
Angel Comb 2: Digestion (Shallows, near Anita’s Blackbox)
- Location: 150 to 180 meters north-northeast of the Lifepod
- Biome: Shallows (Coral Gardens region)
- Requirement: None
The Digestion Adaptation solves your first major survival problem. By default, consuming alien fish damages your Pioneer instead of restoring nutrition. That makes gathering food and water resources effectively useless until you clear this upgrade.
Swim north-northeast from your Lifepod until you reach an abandoned workstation at roughly 150 to 180 meters out. The Angel Comb glows above the station, and Anita’s Blackbox sits right beside it. NOA will eventually send you a waypoint for the Blackbox as part of the main story, pointing you directly toward this location.
This Angel Comb carries no infection. Swim up to the pink sac and interact with it. The Digestion Adaptation unlocks immediately. While you are at the workstation, scan the colony supplies in front of the Angel Comb to make progress on blueprint unlocks.
After grabbing Digestion, stockpiling Halfmoon fish and other local fauna becomes a reliable food source. Pairing that with the Flashlight lets you gather resources and food safely once the ocean darkens.
Angel Comb 3: Heat Tolerance (Anemone Hills, Coral Gardens)
- Location: South edge of the Anemone Hills biome, approximately 200 meters southwest of the Lifepod
- Biome: Anemone Hills (Coral Gardens region)
- Requirement: Sonic Resonator Tool
Heat Tolerance is where the difficulty curve shifts sharply. This Angel Comb sits obscured by large coral towers near the boundary between the Shallows and Anemone Hills. As you approach, the surrounding water turns deep purple and you will hear distorted audio. The area is infected.
The Angel Comb has two tendrils extending from its center, each covered in glowing blue Bloom Cankers caused by a viral infection. The pink center stays sealed until you destroy every canker across both tendrils.
To clear the infection, you need the Sonic Resonator Tool. Craft one and use it to blast each canker on both tendrils. Work your way from the outer tips inward toward the main bulb. Once both tendrils are clean, shoot the remaining nodules on the core. The pink center opens and you can interact with it to unlock Heat Tolerance.
Stay aware of the Marrowbreach in the surrounding area while you work. It patrols near this Angel Comb and will interrupt your clearing run if you are not careful.
Heat Tolerance lets your Pioneer survive high temperatures, opening access to the Graveyard biome to the east. That biome contains resources you cannot farm elsewhere, making this Adaptation critical for mid-game progression. Getting lithium and silver from the outer biomes becomes a realistic goal once Heat Tolerance is active.
Gathering materials for the Sonic Resonator also requires titanium ingots and components like lead that push you out of the starting Shallows. Plan your resource runs before committing to this crafting chain.
Angel Comb 4: Axum Vision (Power Plant, Karakorum Region)
- Location: Beneath the Power Plant point of interest, approximately 1,000 meters east of the Lifepod, at a depth of around 400 meters
- Biome: Power Plant area (Karakorum region)
- Requirement: Tadpole Diver, Depth Module upgrade, Feedback Resonator Tool
Axum Vision is the hardest Adaptation to reach by a significant margin. The Power Plant sits roughly 1,000 meters east of the Lifepod, well past the Alien Base. Do not attempt this swim without a fully equipped submersible. The distance alone makes it impractical, and leviathans patrol the deep waters between the Shallows and the Karakorum region.
Craft a Repair Tool and keep it equipped before departing, since your Tadpole Diver will take damage during this expedition. Install the Depth Module upgrade as well. Without it, your sub hits its crush depth limit well before reaching the Angel Comb at 400 meters down.
When you arrive at the Power Plant, look for orb-shaped alien structures accompanied by a large tower. Descend beneath the Power Plant and enter the glowing purple openings in the floor below. The Angel Comb sits approximately 530 meters east of the Alien Ruins Signal at depth.
The game naturally routes you here after you complete your objectives in the Tadpole Pens, so this fits naturally into late-game progression.
This Angel Comb has three infected tendrils, not two like the previous one. Each tendril carries pink Bloom Cankers that are shielded differently from the Anemone Hills infection. When you approach these cankers, they clamp shut to block your Sonic Resonator blasts. The Sonic Resonator is useless here.
You need the Feedback Resonator Tool to break through the shielded cankers. Gather the fragments for it before making the trip east. Once crafted, use it on each of the three tendrils, following them outward from the Angel Comb’s center to make sure you clear every infected node. Missing even one tendril leaves the center sealed.
After all three tendrils are clean, interact with the pink center to unlock Axum Vision. This Adaptation alters your optical perception and allows you to read and interact with Axum technology across the Karakorum region. Progressing through the main story past this point requires Axum Vision, making it a mandatory unlock for campaign completion.
Farming Necrolei Cysts before this expedition is worth doing, as Strong Acid production supports the crafting chain for late-game tools and base components you need while operating in the Karakorum region.

Tips for Collecting All Adaptations Efficiently
- Grab Digestion before stockpiling food: Any fish you collect before unlocking Digestion is effectively useless as a food source. Get the Shallows Angel Comb first.
- Craft the Sonic Resonator before heading to Anemone Hills: There is no way around the Heat Tolerance infection without it. Do not make the swim empty-handed.
- Locate the Power Plant Angel Comb’s signal early: Even if you are not ready to clear the infection, swimming to the center of the Angel Comb and adding its signal to your HUD makes the return trip far easier. The signal marker saves time when you come back with the Feedback Resonator.
- Use your Tadpole Diver for the Karakorum run: The 1,000-meter distance and leviathan presence make this trip dangerous without a submersible. Keep the Repair Tool equipped throughout the expedition.
- Follow tendrils outward from the center: When clearing Bloom Cankers, start at the base of each tendril and trace it outward to its tip. This approach prevents you from missing shielded nodes tucked at the ends of longer tendrils. Play Now!
