How to Get Lead in Subnautica 2 (All Locations and Farming Guide)

Lead in Subnautica 2 is one of the first resources that pushes you out of the shallow starting area. You cannot find it near your Lifepod, and the game offers almost no hints about where to look. You need Lead to craft the Sonic Resonator, a critical tool for breaking large ore deposits and clearing Angel Combs to unlock new adaptations. Without it, your progression stalls well before the mid-game.

This guide covers every Lead location, the best spot to farm it in volume, how to maximize your haul, and everything you can craft with it.

Where to Find Lead in Subnautica 2

Lead spawns in the Sandstone Ridges and Leadzone Biome, well away from the shallow reef near your Lifepod. The ore is easy to identify once you know what to look for: it has a deep purple to gray color and a blocky, cuboid shape. Small deposits sit on the seafloor and against rock walls, and you can break these by hand. Large boulders require the Sonic Resonator to mine.

The closest reliable Lead location is the Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage), approximately 400 meters northeast of the Lifepod. This damaged section of the ship sits inside a region of shallow canyons with fast-moving water currents, and Lead deposits form at the base of those canyons in both small nodes and large boulders.

A second location is a ravine roughly 280 meters northeast of the Lifepod at a bearing of approximately 75 degrees. Swim northeast until you see a blue natural current moving below you, then follow it down. Small Lead pieces sit scattered across the ravine floor for easy hand collection. Take a Flashlight when you drop into this gorge, since visibility falls fast once you pass the current.

You can also reach this gorge from these alternate landmarks:

  • 300 meters southeast of the Old Habitat
  • 130 meters east-southeast from Camp One

If you have already established a base, the Scanner Station is the fastest way to pinpoint Lead. Build it, interact with it, and select Lead from the resource list. It maps every deposit within a 300 meter radius on a 3D display and lets you drop HUD markers on individual deposits. If Lead does not appear in the list, there are no deposits within range. Build a temporary base 300 meters further northeast and search again from there.

Best Lead Farming Location in Subnautica 2

The Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage) is the best Lead farming location in the early game. The canyon area surrounding the wreck holds a high concentration of deposits, and Lead respawns here as long as you remain at least 400 meters from the Lifepod. The deeper northeast waters act as the respawn threshold, so returning to this area on a regular basis keeps the supply active.

Prepare for the Marrowbreach before you head out. This apex predator patrols the Cicada Wreck region and hunts aggressively in open water. Outside of the Leviathans, it is one of the most dangerous creatures in the game. Bring Distraction Flares and equip mobility tools like Basic Fins or a Wakemaker. Once you arrive, stay close to the canyon floor and use the wreckage for cover if the Marrowbreach closes in.

If your Tadpole Diver takes damage from the predator or the strong water currents in the area, keep a Repair Tool in your inventory before making the trip.

At the Cicada Wreck, start with the small Lead nodes, since those break by hand and yield two to three Lead chunks each. If you already have the Sonic Resonator, break the large boulders for a significantly higher volume haul per dive.

The ravine at 280 meters northeast is a useful early alternative, especially before you have the gear to handle the Marrowbreach. Follow the current into the gorge and collect the small deposits along the floor. The ravine splits into two paths heading north and east, and both hold additional Lead.

How to Farm Lead Faster in Subnautica 2

Crafting the Sonic Resonator is the single biggest efficiency upgrade for Lead farming. Once you have one, the large boulders you have been bypassing each dive become the primary ore source. Craft it as soon as you collect your first few pieces from small nodes, then head back to the Cicada Wreck to mine in volume. The Sonic Resonator also requires Titanium Ingots, so make sure you have those processed before you queue up the recipe.

Pair the Sonic Resonator with the Scanner Station for maximum efficiency. The station marks every deposit within 300 meters on your HUD, letting you move from marker to marker without sweeping the canyon floor manually.

If Lead stops appearing on the Scanner Station entirely, your base has drifted out of range of the spawn zone. Place a temporary base 300 meters further from the Lifepod, drop a new Scanner Station, and check again from the new position.

What Is Lead Used for in Subnautica 2

Lead covers more crafting recipes than most players initially expect. Here is a full breakdown of what you can make:

Tools and Equipment

  • Sonic Resonator

Components

  • Germanium Ingots (two Lead per ingot in the Processor, approximately two minutes per batch)

Food

  • Sugar of Saturn (Lead combined with Salt)

Silver can substitute for Lead when processing Germanium Ingots, so you have options if one material runs short. Lead is generally the easier resource to farm in bulk once you establish the Cicada Wreck as your main source. Lithium is another material you will need as you push further into the game, and it is similarly scarce in the starting region.

For story progression, the Sonic Resonator is also required to advance objectives after you investigate the Tadpole Pens, so collecting Lead early puts you ahead of the curve. Play Now!
