Microsoft is rolling out Efficiency Mode for Microsoft Teams, a new performance-optimized experience built for devices with limited CPU and memory. If you run Teams on older or lower-spec hardware, this mode activates automatically and changes how the app starts and handles video in meetings.

Here is everything you need to know about what Efficiency Mode does, which devices qualify, and how to turn it off.
What Is Microsoft Teams Efficiency Mode?
Microsoft Teams Efficiency Mode is a set of performance adjustments that reduce resource consumption on hardware-constrained devices. It does not overhaul the Teams interface. Instead, it makes two targeted changes to lower the load on your CPU and memory during startup and meetings.
Microsoft confirmed the feature in the Admin Center under Message ID MC1287373 and tied it to Roadmap ID 560055. It applies to Teams for Windows desktop and Teams for Mac desktop.
Which Devices Get Efficiency Mode?
Efficiency Mode targets devices with limited CPU compute and low RAM. Microsoft has not published a precise eligibility threshold, but the feature broadly applies to lower-powered or aging hardware that struggles under Teams’ standard resource usage.
The mode is enabled by default on eligible devices. You do not need to turn it on manually.
What Changes When Efficiency Mode Is Active
When Efficiency Mode turns on, Teams makes a few visible changes to your experience.
Startup loads a static image instead of a chat
- When you launch Teams, the app no longer loads a pre-selected chat. Instead, it shows a static image in the message pane. You then select the conversation you want to open. This reduces the processing load at startup.
Video quality adjusts automatically in meetings
- Teams monitors your device’s resource conditions during meetings and automatically lowers the video resolution sent from your camera when your PC is under strain. This keeps meetings stable without requiring you to manually adjust video settings.
A leaf icon appears in the title bar
- When Efficiency Mode is active, a leaf icon appears in the Teams title bar. This confirms the mode is running on your device.
VDI users see an icon change
- If you use Teams in a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment, the previous “Optimized” pill label in the title bar is replaced with the new Efficiency Mode icon, in line with Microsoft’s updated standardized indicator approach.
Rollout Timeline
Microsoft originally scheduled Efficiency Mode to begin rolling out in early May 2026 and complete by mid-May 2026. That timeline slipped. The updated schedule pushes the start to late May 2026, with full rollout expected by end of May 2026.
How to Disable Microsoft Teams Efficiency Mode
If you want to return to the standard Teams experience, follow these steps:
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Click your profile picture or the three-dot menu and select Settings.
- Go to General.
- Find and enable the option Never use efficiency mode.
That setting lets you opt out regardless of your hardware profile. No admin action is required for organizations where the default behavior works fine, though Microsoft recommends informing helpdesk teams about the new mode and the opt-out path.
