Silver is the most elusive basic material in Subnautica 2. You can stumble across Titanium and Copper almost immediately after spawning, but Silver forces you to leave the starting biome and hunt through specific cave systems. That matters because Silver sits behind some of the most critical early upgrades in the game, including the Standard Air Tank that extends how long you can stay underwater.

The tricky part is that most of the Silver you will see early on comes in large ore nodes that you cannot mine without a Sonic Resonator, and the Sonic Resonator itself requires Silver to craft. This guide breaks down exactly how to get your first Silver by hand, where the best early cave is, how to use the Scanner Station to track deposits, and where to farm Silver efficiently once you have the Sonic Resonator.
What Silver Is Used For in Subnautica 2
Before heading out, it helps to know why Silver is worth the effort. The crafting chain that flows through Silver touches almost every important tool and base facility in the game.

| Scanner Station | Via System Chip + Wiring Kit | Tracks nearby resources |
| Hydroelectric Turbine | 3x Silver (direct) | Power generation |
| Power Cell Terminal | Via Wiring Kit | Base power management |
| Tadpole Dock | Via Silver Ingot | Required for the Tadpole vehicle |
Processed Materials
| Item | Silver Needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wiring Kit | 1x Silver (direct) | Core crafting component |
| Advanced Wiring Kit | Via Wiring Kit | Mid-to-late game electronics |
| System Chip | Via Wiring Kit | Advanced base and gear recipes |
| Dedicated Core | Via Advanced Wiring Kit | High-tier base facilities |
| Silver Ingot | 3x Silver (Processor) | Required for Tadpole Dock |
The Standard Air Tank is the most pressing reason to find Silver fast. It pairs Silver with Titanium and Rubber, and getting it early opens up much deeper and longer dives. If you are also working toward the Tadpole Pens mission, you will need Silver for the Tadpole Dock as well, so stockpiling early pays off.
Small Nodes vs. Large Nodes
Silver spawns in two forms across Subnautica 2:
- Small nodes yield 1x Silver and you can collect them by hand with no tools required.
- Medium nodes yield 3x Silver and can also be collected by hand.
- Large nodes yield 5x Silver each but require the Sonic Resonator to mine.
For your first Silver run, focus exclusively on small and medium nodes. The Silver cave described below contains well over 100 Silver across these collectible deposits, which is more than enough to craft your air tank, wiring kits, and even your first Sonic Resonator.
Silver looks similar to Titanium at a distance, but it has a spikier structure and a noticeably more metallic silver color. Once you have seen it once, you will not mix them up again.
Where to Get Your First Silver (Early Game Cave)
The best early Silver location sits inside a cave roughly 200 meters north of your Lifepod, right at the edge of the starting biome. Here is exactly how to reach it:
- Head north from the Lifepod and pass the Coral Dome sitting on top of a pillar in the open area, keeping the adaptation tree to your right.
- Navigate toward the “Blackbox (Anita)” signal location and find the large Angel Comb plant there.
- Swim a few meters north from the Angel Comb until you spot a cave entrance in the ocean floor, set beside a platform of wreckage.
- You will know you found the right entrance because the sides of the cave are lined with glowing blue and teal flowers. There is also a Blackbox belonging to Singh just outside the entrance.
Swim through the cave and collect every small and medium Silver node you pass. The density increases toward the back of the cave, where the ceiling opens up into a ravine-like split that leads back to the ocean above. The cave also contains a hidden habitat inside, so you can refill your Oxygen without surfacing while you mine.

Since the caves in Subnautica 2 get dark quickly, grabbing a Flashlight before this run is a solid idea so you do not miss nodes tucked into shadowed corners.
Bring a portable locker on the trip if you have one. There is more Silver here than your base inventory can hold, and hauling the overflow back to your base in a single trip saves time.
Alternative Early Location: North of Old Habitat Ruins
A second cluster of Silver caves sits around 400 to 500 meters north of the Lifepod, near the Old Habitat colony ruins. Cave entrances in this area are lined with green glowing flora, and you may also see Pent creatures near the entrances, which signals you are close to a Silver cave.
You will also encounter Mango Nibblers on the route to this area, so carry a med kit before heading out. This location overlaps with the NOA black box mission, so you may visit it naturally during the main story anyway.
How to Use the Scanner Station to Find Silver
Once you have enough Silver to build a Scanner Station (requires 1x System Chip and 1x Wiring Kit), you can track all Silver deposits within a 300-meter radius of your base automatically.
- Interact with the Scanner Station at your base.
- Select Silver from the resource list.
- A 3D map appears showing nearby Silver deposits as orbs.
- Select a deposit to place a marker on your HUD.
- Swim to the marker and collect the Silver.
If Silver does not appear in the Scanner Station list, there are no Silver deposits within 300 meters of your current base. In that case, swim 300 meters in a different direction, drop a new base, and scan again. This is unlikely to happen in the early-to-mid game since Silver is not a rare resource overall.
Late-Game Silver Farming (Sonic Resonator Required)
Once you craft the Sonic Resonator and can break large nodes, the rocky biome 200 meters southeast of the Lifepod becomes your most efficient Silver farm. Here is the path:
- Swim southeast past the Welcome Center wreckage until you exit the starting biome and begin to see large rock pillars.
- Head to the largest nearby pillar, which sticks out of the ocean surface like a three-fingered hand.
- Dive to the base of the pillar to mine the first large Silver node.
- Find another large node on the ocean floor on the west side of the pillar.
- Swim southwest to a medium-sized pillar and mine the large Silver node at its base.
- Head down the cliff to the southwest and mine two more large Silver nodes at the base of two additional pillars near the wreckage.
- Find a fifth large Silver node halfway up the pillar on the opposite side of the wreckage.
Each large node yields 5x Silver when broken with the Sonic Resonator. A single pass through this path fills your inventory. The biome contains dozens of large nodes spread across its pillars, so you can keep extending the route if you need more.
To mine a large Silver node, equip your Sonic Resonator, point it at the node at close range, hold right-click to charge the tool, and release when fully charged. The node breaks and deposits Silver directly into your inventory. Play Now!
