♦ Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Union Home Secretary wrote to all State Chief Secretaries to take immediate and urgent steps to ensure the availability of essential goods, by invoking provisions of the Essential Commodities Act 1955

♦ What are the Essential Commodities (EC) Act 1955?

  • ECA enacted in 1955 to regulate the production, supply, and distribution of a whole host of commodities. It declared ‘essential’ to make them available to consumers at fair prices. Government can also fix the maximum retail price of any packaged product that declared an “essential commodity” under EC Act 1955
  • Union Government brought masks and hand-sanitizers under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 on 14 March 2020 to make sure that these products available to people at the right price

♦ FastSense Diagnostics start-up which makes innovative products for rapid disease diagnosis is developing modules for the detection of COVID 19

♦ NASA unveiled a plan to set up ‘Artemis Base Camp’, the first woman and next man (Human Base Camp) on the moon’s south pole by 2024

♦ IIT Roorkee developed low-cost face shields for protection of first-line healthcare professionals fighting COVID-19

♦ Fitch Ratings slashed India’s growth forecast for the current fiscal to 2% from 5.1 percent projected earlier, which all-time low of 30 years

♦ To ease out transportation problems to public healthcare workers, National Health Authority signed an agreement with “Uber” to provide transportation services

♦ India lifted the ban on the export of malaria drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) which rescinded in the outbreak of COVID19. HCQ is now being used as a possible line of treatment for COVID19

♦ Film and theatre actor Kalinga Sasi, who acted in more than 100 Malayalam films died after battling the liver-related problem

♦ Assam MLA, Aminul Islam of Dhing constituency arrested by the police on sedition charges for his controversial audio clip about quarantining the people, He told people being quarantined will be killed with an injection

State Bank of India reduced the marginal cost of fund-based lending rate (MCLR) by 35 basis points (bps) across all loan tenures from April 10, 2020, which will be one-year MCLR to 7.40% per annum from 7.75% per annum
