1) 15 July: World Youth Skills Day

  • In 2014, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 15 July World Youth Day to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills, decent work and entrepreneurship.
  • “Reimagining Youth Skills Post-Pandemic” is the theme for World Youth Skills Day in 2021.

2) Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to K. Kamaraj on his birth anniversary. Some of the facts

  • Kumaraswami Kamaraj was an Indian independence activist who served as Chief Minister of Madras State (Tamil Nadu) from April 13, 1954, until October 2, 1963.
  • He was the founder and president of the Indian National Congress (Organisation). Between 1964 and 1967, he served as the president of the Indian National Congress for two terms, i.e., from 1964–1967.
  • During the years 1952–1954 and 1969–1975, he was a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.
  • In 1976, he was posthumously given India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna award.
  • Vice-President Hubert Humphrey of the United States called Kamaraj “one of the greatest political leaders in all the countries of the free world”.

3) Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered grievance management application developed by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with IIT-Kanpur.

  • This is the first AI-based system designed to improve government grievance redressal. It was developed to segregate the content of the complaint based on the content and to identify repeat complaints or spam.

4) Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education, and Arjun Munda, the Minister of Tribal Affairs, jointly launched the ‘School Innovation Ambassador Training Program’ for 50,000 school teachers.

  • The objective is to train 50,000 school teachers in areas such as innovation, entrepreneurship, intellectual property rights, design thinking, product development, and idea generation.
  • The program was designed by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell and the AICTE for School Teachers based on their “Innovation Ambassador Training Program for Faculty Members of Higher Educational Institutions.”

5) In lieu of GST compensation, the Ministry of Finance released 75,000 crores to states and UTs with legislatures under the back-to-back loan facility.

  • This release is in addition to the regular GST compensation that is released every two months from actual cess collection.
  • The Ministry of Finance frontloaded the release of assistance under the back-to-back loan facility during FY 2021-22, releasing 75, 000 crores in a single instalment to assist the States/UTs in their endeavour.

7) The 7th meeting of the BRICS Labor & Employment Ministers India’s presidency was chaired by Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Labour & Employment.

  • Ministers from the BRICS countries participated in the meeting. The BRICS countries are Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
  • The discussion was held on 4 priority areas of cooperation, namely Promoting Social Security Agreements among BRICS Nations, Formalization of Labor Markets, Women’s Labor Force Participation, and Gig and Platform Workers: Role in the Labor Market.

8) Narayan Rane, Minister for MSME, launched Khadi cotton babywear and unique Khadi handmade paper slippers at the Khadi showroom in New Delhi.

  • The new products include Khadi’s first-ever cotton clothing for babies and handmade paper slippers “use & throw” developed by KVIC with the objective of supporting the handmade paper industry and creating sustainable employment for artisans.
  • The new products can be purchased from the Khadi showroom and online portal, www.khadiindia.gov.in

9) The Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia have signed an agreement to establish a Centre for Advanced Transportation Technology and Systems (CATTS) at IAHE, Noida.

  • The Agreement is for a project for capacity building, technology transfer, and the creation of an enabling environment for the establishment of CATTS in IAHE.
  • It will also promote Australian and Indian transportation industries and startups, including opportunities for innovation, research, and development of advanced transportation systems.

10) Arjun Munda, Minister of Tribal Affairs, launched the nationwide campaign “COVID Teeka Sang Surakshit Van, Dhan aur Uddyam” to accelerate COVID vaccination among Indian tribals.

  • The campaign will make use of the TRIFED, Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India’s 45,000 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVK)

11) Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize winner from Bangladesh, will receive the Olympic Laurel Award in 2021. At the Tokyo Olympics Opening ceremony, he will receive the Olympic Laurel Award.

  • The Olympic Laurel was introduced in 2016 to honour sporting achievements in the areas of culture, education, peace, and development.
  • It was given for the first time in 2016 at the Rio Olympics 2016 to Kenyan former Olympian Kip Keino, who opened a children’s home, a school, and an athletes’ training centre in Kenya.
