Eternamax Eternatus is one of the toughest challenges in Pokémon GO. Appearing as a Tier 6 Max Battle during the Max Finale event, this colossal Poison/Dragon-type Pokémon requires careful preparation, the right team composition, and a coordinated group effort to defeat. While you cannot catch Eternamax Eternatus after victory, the rewards and Candy you earn are vital for powering up your own Eternatus.
How to Beat Eternamax Eternatus
- Type: Poison + Dragon
- Weaknesses: Dragon, Ice, Psychic, Ground
- Max Particle Cost: 800 (only consumed if you win)
- Group Size: Recommended ~100 Trainers to clear within 1–2 Max Phases
- Catchable? No – defeating it rewards Candy and resources instead
In Max Battles, you can only bring three Pokémon per Trainer, and they must be Dynamax or Gigantamax eligible. This restriction makes smart team-building and coordination essential. Losing does not consume your Max Particles, so you only spend them if you win.

Defenders rely on Max Guard to protect the team and build the Max Meter while resisting Eternatus’s strongest attacks.
- Zamazenta (Crowned Shield) – Best choice due to strong resistances.

- Dynamax Excadrill, Corviknight, Omastar, Kabutops – Solid alternatives that help charge the Max Meter.
Healers (Support)
Healers extend team survival with Max Spirit, while often doubling as bulky defenders.
- Blissey (Dynamax) – The best healer thanks to its massive stamina.
- Wailord, Snorlax, Lapras – Good second options if Blissey isn’t available.
Team Composition Strategy
Divide your lobby into two key groups:
- Max Meter Builders / Frontline: Pokémon like Zamazenta, Zacian, Excadrill, Corviknight, Omastar, Kabutops, Blissey, or Wailord focus on charging the Max Meter early.
- G-Max Move Attackers: Once the meter is full, swap in high-damage Pokémon like Eternatus, Latios, Metagross, or Hatterene to unleash powerful G-Max attacks. Rotate them out after their burst to avoid unnecessary knockouts.
To succeed in 1–2 Max Phases, aim for around 100 Trainers. Smaller groups will take longer and require more rotations.
Key Battle Tips
- Use only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. Others cannot participate.
- Don’t waste Charged Moves. Focus on Fast Moves that generate the correct Max Move typing.
- Dodge when possible. The single-target attack can be avoided and otherwise hits for double damage.
- Maximize rewards. Spending 200 PokéCoins doubles all drops, making farming far more efficient.
After the Fight
Eternamax Eternatus cannot be caught after victory. Instead, Trainers are rewarded with Stardust, XP, and large amounts of Eternatus Candy and Candy XL.
Eternatus itself is unlocked at Rank 60 of the GO Pass: Max Finale, always keeps Dynamax Cannon, and cannot be traded or sent to Pokémon HOME. Since powering it up requires a massive amount of Candy and XL, farming Eternamax Eternatus battles is the best way to stock up.
