This reveal showcased three powerful Mega Evolutions—Mega Altaria EX, Mega Gyarados EX, and Mega Blaziken EX—and hinted at game-changing mechanics that could redefine how battles play out in the mobile TCG.

First Mega Evolution EX Cards in TCG Pocket

The trailer confirmed three new Mega Evolution EX cards, each bringing distinct stats and effects to the table:

Mega Blaziken EX210Mega Burning – 120 DMGDiscards a Fire Energy; opponent’s Active Pokémon is BurnedTorchic → Combusken → Mega Blaziken (Stage 2)

The trailer also indirectly confirmed the presence of Swablu, Torchic, and Combusken as regular cards in the expansion, since they are needed to evolve into the new Megas.

Mega Evolution EX Impact on Battles

In Pokémon TCG Pocket’s current battle system, a player needs three points to win a match, usually earned by knocking out opposing Pokémon. Until now, the maximum points you could gain from one knockout was two.

With Mega Evolution EX cards, knocking one out immediately grants your opponent all three points—an instant loss. This high-risk, high-reward design means trainers must think carefully before committing to a Mega Evolution in battle.

Interestingly, many Mega EX cards revealed so far require only two Energy to attack, making them cost-efficient despite their high stakes. Their attacks also consistently feature “Mega” in the name, such as Mega Blaster or Mega Burning.

The in-game Pokédex filters already include an HP 300 tier, a detail that strongly suggests the arrival of sturdier Mega Evolution cards. While not officially confirmed, it aligns with how Mega Pokémon have historically been designed.

Mega Evolution EX Mechanics in TCG Pocket

The reveal suggests that Mega Evolutions in TCG Pocket can evolve directly from their prior stage, such as Magikarp evolving straight into Mega Gyarados EX.

There is also speculation that Rare Candy could enable stage-skipping—for example, Torchic evolving directly into Mega Blaziken EX without Combusken—but this mechanic has not been officially confirmed.

A Possible Hoenn-Themed Expansion

The first wave of Mega EX cards includes Mega Blaziken and Mega Altaria, both from the Hoenn region.

This has fueled speculation that the upcoming set could feature a Hoenn theme, possibly including iconic Mega Evolutions or even Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. While not confirmed, it aligns with the reveal’s regional focus.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Mega Evolution EX Release Date

Although an official date has not been confirmed, the Mega Evolution expansion is slated for Fall 2025.

Looking at past release patterns, A4 launched on July 30, with A4a expected in late August and A4b in late September. That puts the likely launch of the Mega-focused A5 expansion in late October—conveniently close to the game’s October 30 anniversary.

If this holds true, trainers won’t have to wait long before building decks around these Mega-powered Pokémon.

The debut of Mega Evolution EX cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket is one of the biggest shifts the mobile TCG has seen since launch. For collectors, it’s a chance to add some of the franchise’s most iconic forms to their digital binders. For competitive battlers, it’s both an opportunity and a challenge—one that could either diversify the meta or destabilize it completely.

With their low Energy requirements, devastating attacks, and high-stakes KO risk, Megas will force trainers to rethink how they balance aggression and defense.
