Windows 11 8GB RAM Update: Up to 20% Faster, But Does It Really Help?

Microsoft has rolled out a set of Windows 11 performance updates that it first tested with Windows Insiders. The company claims the operating system now responds up to 20% faster, and it points to smarter memory handling as a key reason. Microsoft also says PCs with 8GB of RAM should feel a clear difference. Early independent testing, however, tells a more mixed story.

Windows 11 8GB RAM

Here is what Microsoft changed, how it measured the speed gain, and what real users are seeing on their machines.

Windows 11 Is Up to 20% More Responsive: What Microsoft Changed

The update targets the parts of Windows that people touch most often.

Navjot Virk, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows Experiences, outlined the changes in a post on the Windows blog. Engineers reworked Start, File Explorer, Search, Snipping Tool and Edge to make them react faster. The bigger theme is memory. Microsoft says Windows can now hold up to 2GB more of your active data in RAM rather than pushing it out to slower storage. That keeps apps and browser tabs quicker to return to when you switch between them.

Windows 11 Widgets Now Load Only When Opened on 8GB RAM PCs

Low-memory systems get one specific change aimed at freeing RAM.

On PCs with 8GB of memory or less, Windows no longer keeps Widgets running in the background. They load only when you open the Widgets panel. Microsoft says this frees more than 200MB of memory for your apps and other tasks.

New Windows 11 Features: Movable Taskbar, Faster Windows Hello and AirPods Pairing

Several quality-of-life fixes arrive alongside the speed work.

  • Movable taskbar: You can finally place the taskbar on the top or either side of the screen.
  • Faster Windows Hello: Sign-in with face or fingerprint is quicker and more reliable.
  • Better Bluetooth pairing: Microsoft says AirPods now pair up to 15 seconds faster.
  • Less disruptive updates: Windows Update interrupts your work less often.
  • Cleaner Widgets area: Microsoft tidied up the Widgets section.

How Microsoft Tested the 20% Faster Windows 11 Claim

Microsoft backed its headline number with a specific build comparison.

The company compared build 26300.9550 against the older build 26200.7628. It timed how quickly Search, Start, Settings, Snipping Tool, File Explorer, Microsoft 365 and right-click menus responded across both builds. The newer build came out up to 20% faster in those tests.

These are responsiveness tests, and none of them directly measures memory usage. Microsoft’s footnote for the memory claims only says they come from improvements in the same build, without a separate published benchmark.

Windows 11 26H2 Cuts Idle RAM Use by 1GB to 3GB on 16GB+ PCs

Independent testers can confirm the memory savings, but only on machines with plenty of RAM.

After the Windows 11 26H2 update, many users with 16GB, 32GB and 48GB systems reported idle memory use dropping by roughly 1GB to 3GB. One Reddit user with 48GB of RAM saw boot memory fall from 6.9GB to about 4.8GB. Windows Latest tested a 16GB laptop and found idle usage dropped from over 10GB to around 7GB.

A separate hands-on test on a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with 32GB of RAM showed idle use falling from 8.5GB to 6.7GB, a 1.8GB drop. Standby cache fell by the same amount, which suggests Windows now holds less data in standby rather than shuffling it around.

Does Windows 11 Use Less RAM on 8GB PCs? What Early Tests Show

The tier Microsoft highlighted most is the one where testers see the least change.

Windows Latest’s 8GB test machine showed no change and still sat at 96% memory use. User reports on forums and Reddit follow the same pattern, with 8GB owners seeing little or no improvement. Microsoft’s own claim for this tier rests mainly on the Widgets change, which saves about 200MB and does not match the multi-gigabyte drops on larger machines.

Why Windows 11 Is Being Optimized for 8GB RAM Amid the Memory Price Crisis

Rising memory prices are pushing both Microsoft and Google to slim down their operating systems.

Memory makers have shifted production toward high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers, which has squeezed supply for regular PCs. Google said in July that it was reworking Android to need less RAM, citing Morgan Stanley figures that put memory at $2.80 per gigabyte in 2025 versus about $12 now. Samsung does not expect relief until 2028.

The effect shows in sales. European desktop shipments dropped about 20% in the third quarter, with a steeper fall forecast for the fourth. Gartner expects PCs under $500 to nearly vanish by 2028. With RAM upgrades getting expensive, 8GB is likely to remain the standard for budget buyers, which explains why Microsoft keeps naming it as a priority.

Pavan Davuluri, who leads Windows, had already said in August that Microsoft would trim Windows to run well on 8GB, naming the memory allocator, WinUI 3 and WebView2 as areas of work.

Windows 11 New AI Search and Photos App: What Insiders Get Now

Two bigger features are available to Windows Insiders today.

Microsoft’s redesigned AI-powered Search lets testers run thousands of actions directly from the search box, turning it into something closer to a chatbot. Microsoft plans a broader release later this year.

Insiders can also try a new Photos app. Its gallery pulls images from local storage, OneDrive and iCloud in one place. Microsoft says the built-in editor opens 25% faster and the image viewer loads 30% faster.

How to Get the Windows 11 Performance Update

Microsoft is releasing these changes gradually, so not every PC will see them at once.

  1. Open Settings with Win + I.
  2. Go to Windows Update.
  3. Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
  4. Click Check for updates and install what appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much faster is Windows 11 after the update?

Microsoft says Windows 11 is up to 20% more responsive, based on timing Start, Search, Settings, File Explorer and other common actions on build 26300.9550 versus build 26200.7628.

Will my 8GB laptop run better?

Microsoft says yes, mainly because Widgets now load only on demand and free over 200MB. Early user tests on 8GB machines, though, show little or no drop in overall memory use.

Why does my 16GB PC use less RAM now?

After the 26H2 update, Windows appears to keep less data in standby cache. Users with 16GB or more report idle memory use falling by about 1GB to 3GB.

Can I move the taskbar to the top of the screen now?

Yes. This rollout lets you place the taskbar at the top or on either side of the display.

When will the new Windows Search reach everyone?

It is currently available to Windows Insiders, and Microsoft plans to roll it out more broadly later this year.
