52nd IFFI Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award 2021

Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award 2021: Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, announced that Istevan Szabo and Martin Scorsese will be awarded the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award during the 52nd International Film Festival of India in Goa.

Istvan Szabo is one of Hungary’s most renowned film filmmakers of the last several decades, well known for classics such as Mephisto (1981) and Father (1966).

Martin Scorsese is a key figure in the New Hollywood era, widely regarded as one of the film’s greatest and most important filmmakers.

The Film Festival of the BRICS

Thakur also announced, for the first time, films from five BRICS countries would be shown along with IFFI at the BRICS Film Festival.

The opening film for this year’s IFFI is “The King of All the World” (El Rey de Todo El Mundo), directed by Carlos Saura. This will be the film’s international premiere.

The Mid Fest Film will be Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, which won Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. Around 30 films from prestigious International Film Festivals have been shortlisted for screening at the 52nd IFFI in the Festival Kaleidoscope and World Panorama sections.

Honoured at the 52nd IFFI 2021

On the occasion of Satyajit Ray’s birth festival in 2021, the Directorate of Film Festivals will pay homage to him with a ‘Special Retrospective.’

Dilip Kumar, Sumitra Bhave, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Sanchari Vijay, Surekha Sikri, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Bertrand Tavenier, Christopher Plummer, and Jean-Claude Carrière will be honoured at the 52nd IFFI.

International Jury

The International Competition Jury for the 52nd IFFI is comprised of the following individuals:

  • Stephen Woolley (65 years old) is a film producer and director from the United Kingdom.
  • Ciro Guerra (age 40) from Columbia
  • Vimukthi Jayasundara (44 years old) is from Sri Lanka.
  • Nila Madhab Panda (47 years old) from India

Retrospective at the 52nd IFFI 2021

Bela Tarr, a famous Hungarian filmmaker, will be included in the 52nd IFFI’s retrospective section. At the Berlin, Cannes, and Locarno Film Festivals, his films have received critical acclaim. He is an independent filmmaker who created his visual style.

Additionally, a retrospective of Andrei Konchalovsky, a Russian filmmaker and stage director, will be shown. Numerous honours have been bestowed upon his films, including the Cannes Grand Prix Spécial du Jury, a FIPRESCI Award, two Silver Lions, three Golden Eagle Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award.

Rajinikanth, the recipient of the DadasahebPhalke Award, will also be included in the retrospective.

Sean Connery, the first actor to play fictional British secret agent James Bond on the big screen, will receive a Special Tribute during the festival.

75 Creative Minds of Tomorrow to mark Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

Anurag Thakur said that IFFI would offer a platform for emerging talent from throughout India to interact with mainstream movie directors and the industry. 75 young creative minds (under the age of 35) will be invited to the Festival to engage with industry experts and attend Masterclasses. These young filmmakers will be chosen through a national competition open to all young filmmakers.

The Competition’s objective is to give 75 young filmmakers, actors, singers, and screenwriters a platform to exhibit their work in a globally recognised event.

The deadline for online applications is 30th October 2021. The detailed eligibility criteria for submitting films to the ’75 Creative Minds of Tomorrow’ competition, as well as the application form, are available at www.dff.gov.in and www.iffi.org.

Cooperation with OTT

IFFI has invited big OTT players to participate in the festival for the first time. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Zee5, Voot, and Sony Liv will participate in the Film Festival for the first time, hosting exclusive Masterclasses, content launches and previews, curated film package screenings, and a variety of other on-ground and virtual activities.

Netflix is hosting a three-day virtual masterclass led by Gobelins – School L’image, a renowned school of image and art in Paris.

Netflix will organise the India premiere of Jane Campion’s ‘The Power of the Dog.’ Additionally, it has been proposed to organise a special screening of the film Dhamaka, which will include an introduction by the film’s director, Kartik Aaryan, and a sneak peek of Episode 1 of “Aranyak,” a forthcoming criminal thriller series starring Raveena Tandon and Ashutosh Rana.

SonyLiv has proposed a Masterclass with Sumit Purohit and Saurav Dey, screenwriters for Scam-1992, led by Indranil Chakraborty, Business Head of studio Next.

From November 20th to 28th, 2021, Goa will host the 52nd edition of India’s most prestigious film festival.
