Windows 11 26H2 System Requirements: Is Your PC Compatible?

Windows 11 26H2 (the 2026 Update) carries the same hardware requirements as Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft is not raising the bar. If your PC already runs Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2, it qualifies for 26H2 without any hardware changes.

Windows 11 26H2 System Requirements

If you are still on Windows 10, your machine must meet the original Windows 11 minimum requirements before you can upgrade. This guide covers every hardware requirement for Windows 11 26H2, including standard PCs, Copilot+ PCs, and unsupported devices.

Minimum Hardware Requirements for Windows 11 26H2

These are the baseline specs your PC must meet to install Windows 11 26H2:

ComponentMinimum Requirement
Processor1 GHz or faster, 2+ cores, 64-bit compatible
RAM4 GB
Storage64 GB or larger
System FirmwareUEFI
TPMTrusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0
GraphicsDirectX 12 compatible, WDDM 2.0 driver
Display720p HD, 9 inches or larger diagonally
InternetRequired during setup (Microsoft account needed)

A note on Secure Boot: Secure Boot is not technically required, but Microsoft strongly recommends it. Some scenarios, such as modern games that use anti-cheat systems, require Secure Boot to be active. If you plan to dual-boot with Linux, you will need to disable Secure Boot.

Copilot+ PC Requirements for Windows 11 26H2

Copilot+ PCs require significantly higher specs to unlock the AI-powered features Microsoft introduced in recent Windows versions. Standard Windows 11 26H2 runs on any compatible PC, but Copilot+ features only activate on hardware that meets this bar:

ComponentCopilot+ Requirement
ProcessorSnapdragon X, AMD Ryzen AI 300, or Intel Core Ultra 200V series
NPU40+ TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second)
RAM16 GB or greater
Storage256 GB SSD or larger
FirmwareUEFI with Secure Boot enabled
TPMTPM 2.0
GraphicsDirectX 12 compatible, WDDM 2.0 driver
DisplayHD 720p or greater, 9+ inches diagonally

If your PC does not include a qualifying NPU, it cannot run Copilot+ features, but it can still run Windows 11 26H2 under the standard requirements above.

Can You Install Windows 11 26H2 on an Unsupported PC?

Microsoft does not block the upgrade entirely on unsupported hardware, but it carries risk and Microsoft provides no official support for it.

To install Windows 11 26H2 on an unsupported PC via ISO or bootable USB drive, the machine still needs:

  • A 64-bit processor with at least 2 cores
  • 1 GHz or faster clock speed
  • Intel, AMD, or ARM architecture
  • At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage
  • TPM 1.2 (not 2.0) as the minimum
  • SSE4.2 instruction set support
  • POPCNT (Population Count) instruction support

The SSE4.2 and POPCNT requirement explained: Starting with Windows 11 24H2, the OS requires SSE4.2 instructions to install and boot. POPCNT is part of the SSE4.2 instruction set, so both requirements effectively resolve to the same check. Processors released before 2007 typically lack these instructions and cannot run any version of Windows 11 from 24H2 onward.

You can verify whether your CPU includes SSE4.2 support by opening the CPU-Z application and checking the Instructions section under the CPU tab.

How Windows 11 26H2 Installs (Enablement Package Model)

Windows 11 26H2 does not arrive as a large operating system download. Microsoft delivers it as a small enablement package, roughly 174 KB for devices already on 24H2 or 25H2.

This package works by switching on feature code that already exists in your current Windows installation in a disabled state. Microsoft seeds this code through regular cumulative updates. When 26H2 releases, the enablement package flips those code flags to active, bumps the version number, and triggers a single reboot. The entire process takes approximately two minutes.

For a fresh installation on a device running Windows 10 or an older Windows 11 version, the full upgrade requires approximately 6.5 GB (a 5.3 GB base image plus an 887 MB cumulative update payload).

Once upgraded, Windows 11 26H2 extends your device’s support lifecycle. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of security updates from the general availability date, while Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise Multi-session editions receive 36 months of support through approximately October 2028.

How to Get Windows 11 26H2

Microsoft has not pushed 26H2 to the general public yet. The official release targets Fall 2026, likely around September or October. However, you can access it early through the Windows Insider Program using the Experimental channel.

Related Windows How-To

Windows 11 26H2 keeps the same hardware bar as Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Any PC already running either of those versions is fully compatible. The minimum specs (4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, TPM 2.0, 64-bit dual-core CPU) remain unchanged. Copilot+ features still require a Snapdragon X, AMD Ryzen AI 300, or Intel Core Ultra 200V processor with a 40+ TOPS NPU and 16 GB RAM. For most users, the upgrade to 26H2 will arrive automatically, take about two minutes, and require just one restart.
